The Necromancers reagents are:

Batwing

Gravedust

Daemon Blood

Pig Iron

Nox Crystal

They can be bought from NPC Vendor Mages and the Necromancers in Umbra or found as loot in Treasure Chests or on some monsters. Liches and Lich Lords are great sources.

The scrolls for each spell can be made by a Scribe who already has the spell in his/her book or found as loot in Treasure Chests or on some monsters. Liches and Lich Lords reign here as well, though rat Mages are a great source too.

The Necromancers Spellbook must be purchased from the NPC Mage or Necromancer Vendors. There is no way for a player to craft one at this time.

The Necro Gain Guide

For Spirit Speak, you can throw in the occasional active use to heal up a bit, but the majority of your gains are going to come passively while working Necromancy.

This first guide is courtesy of Ly Las or UOForums and a very good guide for spamming spells at home while chatting (or Motherlode gain areas :) )

Thanks to the removal of 8*8 you dont have to move about when training a skill now, so thats half the trouble of training necromancy. Grab an LRC suit, find a nice little safe spot to sit and cast spells, and your away!

As a Side note. Both a shadow wisp summon, and Lich Form allows massive mana regeneration. Its adivsible to wear jewels to get yourself a summoned wisp and into lich form as quick as possible as it realy does speed things up a bit.

Skill Level / Spell to cast

30-40 / Wraith Form

40-60 / Horrific Beast

60-75 / Wither

75-97 / Lich Form

97-120 / Vampiric Embrace

Some people begin casting vampiric embrace at 95, or at some point put on jewels to cast it. The main reason for this is because someone in the 90's youll hit a real nasty slow spot. A wall if you will, not everyone hits this wall but most do. Ive always found putting on some necromancy jewels when i hit that slow spot helps.

Hope you find this quick training guide usefull! Good luck in your training!

Now if you are out hunting to gain, there are some other spells that you can put in to the mix. This guide from Chandalir of Stratics takes into account just those spells...

0 to 30 : Buy it from one of the Necromancers in Umbra

30.x to 55.x : (20.0 requirement spells) Pain Spike (on self for instance, although be wary of armor damage!), Blood Oath (if you have someone else along with you), Corpse Skin (again, requires someone else), Evil Omen (same) or Wraith Form.

55.x to 75.x : (40.0 requirement spells) Horrific Beast or Animate Dead (requires a corpse though, so only good if you hunt for your gains). Alternatively, mix in a Mind Rot or Summon Familiar (both require 30.0 Necromancy (and Spirit Speak in case of familiar)).

75.x to 90.x : (60.0 requirement spells) Wither is your best bet both for hunting and for 8x8. Mix in the occasional Strangle (65.0 requirement) for healing gains on a boat or for added damage when hunting.

90.x to 105.x : (70.0 requirement spells) Lich Form is your absolute best bet - plus, its a very nice spell that grants you lots of mana Keep up with Strangles and Withers as both will give you gains all the way to 100.0 (in case of Strangle, 105.0 actually).

105.x to 120.0 : (99.0 requirement spells) Vampiric Embrace is definently the fastest way to legendary, although mixing in Revenants (80.0 requirement) works well too.

sujestion on the lower range gains. Summon familiar but dont actually pick one. The skill gain check is on casting the spell, not off which famliar you choose. This has saved me lots of time in training myself. You do not need SS(spirit speak) to cast summon familiar, just to get any selectable gump to apear you need at least 30 SS

happy gaining

If you happen to already have Necromancy at your cap and need to train up Spirit Speak (this happened to me when playing around on soulstones) then instead of using SS over and over, just spam Curse Weapon. Since you have the same chance to gain casting it as you do using the SS skill, it is faster because it has no skill timer stopping you from using it over and over.

mein gott man! looks great. My only suggestion would be harder facts on the spells. UO descriptions are notoriusly vaque. For instance, the lich form also gives 13 MR.

My favorites are descriptions like hit lower defense:"lowers opponents defense for a short period of time".

And you gave me a LOVELY idea for the FAQ forum! Thank you Zeke!!!!

Awesome FAQ! I've been playing a Necro/Mage for three years now almost, primarily in pvp, but of course I've tore up some champ spawns too. I've got alot of advice on how to play a necro, and necro/mage in particular, and would be happy to post it when I have some time :)

That would be great! We could use a tactics guide for all of the skills. Starting with necro is a great place!

When you do, start it in a new thread. I will stickie it for you (and give you any help / advice you may need).

Is the info on curse weapon correct? I mean with 100 ss, the curse weapon buff doesnt last longer than 2.5 seconds...

I was interested in this too. Why such a small bonus to the timer?

Also, so that people don't take it the wrong way, I'd like to note that Curse Weapon ends after the first hit. You can't gain health from multiple hits casting it once.

Edit: just checked the UO playguide.

"Effect: Briefly enchant your weapon to gain the power of life drain. While enchanted, the weapon will heal its wielder with 50% of the damage it deals out. Duration in Seconds = Caster's Spirit Speak x 10 ÷ 34 + 1. (30 seconds at GM, or about 36 seconds at Legendary)"
