Recommended Posts

Complete newb here! o.o One of my friends mentioned this game and I decided to take a peek; so far it's piqued my interest; I might buy the game when I get some money :3

I'm completely new to UO, even the Ultima series itself, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for starting out? Guides or the likes?

Also, could I have a link to the varying races/ skills that are available? Thanks~ <3

Hi and welcome!  What shard are you playing?  If you happen to be playing Pacific, let me know and I'll do what I can to help.

I don't really know where to find new player guide myself, but I think some of the others might be able to point you in the right direction.  I will also say this: there are no mistakes in UO.  If you start off with certain skills, you can always change them later.  Don't be afraid to experiment.  Having said that, there are a few skills which are far more difficult to train up than others.  Animal taming is one of them and the barding skills (Peacemaking, Provocation, Discordance) for another.  If you wanted to make a tamer or bard, I suggest with Animal Taming or those previously mentioned bard skills at 50.  The support skills for those are easy to train, however, those being Animal Lore and Music so you can keep those at 0 and just train them up in-game.

What else?  Oh yes, New Haven is a great place to start training early skills.  You can buy training for most skills up to 40 (which costs 400 gold).  Then you can take up quests for those skills which speeds up your gains while on the quest.  Another word of advice is to buy up the skills you mean to train and then take up the quests at the same time.  So say you want to make a warrior, you'd buy up Swordsmanship, Tactics, Parry, Healing, and Anatomy first.  Then go get the quests for all those.  As you fight, you'll get the faster gains in every skill so long as you have all the quests.  Mind you, you can't buy skills if you are on a quest, so buy the skills first, then get the quests.

To pay for this training, you can do escorts around New Haven.  Just have to familiarize yourself with the town and take the folks where they need to go.  Just double click the Quest Giver NPCs who are towns folk (peasants, seekers of adventure, nobles, etc.)

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know and if you have more specific questions I might be able to help.

My first suggestion to a new player would be:  Just make a character, run around, explore, learn the basics, and have fun!  There really isn't any kind of level barrier or anything to keep a brand new player from experiencing anything, so go wild!  go into places, make some mental notes, and die a lot lol :)  The more you learn on your own about this game, the more you will understand when people start talking about methods for earning gold, gathering materials, using skills and completing builds for your characters.  Learn how to interact with NPCs, basic combat moves, and basic spell casting (all can be done in Haven).  Then when you have more specific questions like: How do I make 100k gold in a few minutes, or How do I tame a dragon, or what is a 100% LRC suit, or How does that warrior solo pretty much everything?  The answers you get will make more sense to you :) ...and all of which any one of us will be happy to explain in the near future.
