At the town hall meeting it has been said (by Derek I think) that a global vendor search, like some websites are offering for the luna region, is interesting but need some careful consideration as not to lessen the worth of certain real estate.

So I have been thinking: how about some central search point ingame, that allows you to search globally for an item. The results are then listed by vendor name and price. You pick one and a map is dropped into your backpack that shows the area of the vendor and a pin, where the vendor is located.

You would still have to find the region and think about how to get there, so vendor houses in town or near towns or moongates would still have a higher value than a house far off in the woods. But the ones in the woods would still have the possibility to lure customers to their shop by discounts.

With the addition of the new randomized treasure map system, there's obviously some code that allows to generate a partial map of any area of the overall map. All you (read: the devs) have to do, is to feed that routine with the vendor coordinates instead of randomly generated t-map coordinates.

Apart from that, the devs "only" need to implement the search, which would only be a database query in a perfect world and some parsing algorythm in a less perfect world. The search could be accessed by a bulletin board or a map at a certain point ingame or at the banks. Even cooler imho, would be some NPC at the merchants guild like 'Ted the Archivar' who lets you browse his documents and maps for a small fee (50gp?) and the hands you the appropriate vendor map. But that's details...

To summarize: I think that using t-map like vendor maps as a result of a global search should address all major concerns about a global search while posing a manageable amount of coding for the devs.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I don't really see why we have to protect luna house owners. I'm probably the minority but i'd like to see a system where people who maintain good vendors don't have to buy six hundred million gold worth of house to be able to sell their items. It used to be word of mouth would lead people to your store, but now you need to basically flood the server with runes to hope for ANY patronage at all, because of the search sites, and people's laziness when it comes to looking around for deals.

It doesnt help newbies to have absolutely no way of selling items outside of spamming and the secure trade window. New players aren't selling artifacts here, they'll be selling things like iron and craftables. Sure, you can rent a space in luna, but how many new players to a server or to the game know a luna house owner? How many luna house owners actively look for tenants?

I'm no fan of luna either, but I also think about a people with shops near moongates, roads and towns. These places where highly desireable in the pre-luna time and are nearly worthless now.

I like the heated economic competition in Luna. Thanks to those search sites, prices tend to bottom out pretty quickly to the 'real value' for a particular shard. I also enjoy not having to run all over the world for a good deal.

Yes, I pay a small premium for Luna's convenience...but as a shopper with limited play time, I think that's okay for me.

I think Luna is a love/hate relationship! I mean we all love finding the items we want, but how fair is it that only a few lucky people who got to place houses in Luna have the best opportunities to sell their wares? I think they need to create a global search/auction house and either get rid of vendors or let us go to this auction house/search and just buy the item and it will take it from anywhere the vendor item is and place it in our pack and remove the gold from our bank. Every player should have the same opportunity and ease to sell wares as the people who live in Luna.

I view Luna the same way I view corporate America ha. Its always better to buy from smaller shops outside the juggernaut of lag  and overpriced ridiculousness that embodies Luna. I returned to the game 3 years ago and immediately disliked the city of vendors idea. I use those search sites to find what Im looking for at the lowest price. Sometimes I have to go to Luna and it annoys me. I have a home in Fel on Ice Isle and would like to put a vendor or two up but who's ever going to see that vendor? The new search option will bring me business. I think UO adding the weird map to your pack is just an unneeded step, but hey...it works.

I have no problem doing away with the Luna mall stuff. Id love to see the vendors disappear and people instead use their lots to showcase museums and creative home designs and whatnot. Some UO culture if you will.
