Ninjitsu is a flexible and practical skill, especially for those who don't want to be seen or heard when in a tight spot. This guide is intended to offer a few ways of using the ninjitsu skill to your benifit, both in PvM and PvP.

Unlike some of the other skills, a ninja isn't stuck with just one way of killing, but rather can rely on melee, archery, magery or taming in order to be effective. It also doesn't always require the maximum value to be useful.

There are three ranges of ninjitsu skill which are commonly seen as being good. For the "pure" ninja, a range of 110-120 ninjitsu skill allows you to use all of the animal forms to your benifit, including the wolf form which adds both hit points and hit chance increase to your arsenal. Additionally, it gives you the maximal benefit from your death strikes.

The range from 80-100 is common in those ninja who only want to use mirror image to help them out of a tight spot. With that range, your mirror images are somewhat effective and your dog form adds quite a bit to your hit point regeneration. You also have access to llama form for quick getaways if you're dismounted.

At 50 ninjitsu, you can do two very important things. First, you can use smoke bombs. When combined with 100 hiding and a lot of stealth, it is very handy for a safe escape. Second, it gives you access to ninjitsu special moves on your weapons. This is very handy for ninja archers who can use imbued yumi to devastating effect. If your ninjitsu plans do not include mirror images or death strikes, then 50 is a good number to stop at.

A ninja without hiding may not be perceived as being a true ninja, but the skill doesn't need hiding to be used to its potential.

So without further ado: Templates. These are all 720 skill point templates, so the newer player may need to use skill jewels or trim points off to make them work. These templates also don't rely on skill enhancements, which can be used to vastly improve your ninja's skills. For examples, shadow dancer's leggings or burglar's bandana can be used to increase your stealth skill, giving you more room for other skills.

The traditional ninja:
120 ninjitsu
120 stealth
120 fencing
100 tactics
100 hiding
80 healing
80 anatomy

You don't see many people using this template any more in PvP, and the ones who don't use it in PvP typically use it to stealth to out of the way spawns while still having a way to defend themselves when they get there.

The bokuto-ninja
120 ninjitsu
120 bushido
120 swords
100 stealth
100 hiding
100 tactics
60 chivalry

This is my current "flavor of the week" for PvP and requires a low dexterity and high intelligence. What I do in PvP is to mana dump with nerve strikes, death strikes and explosions potions. If the other player survives the mana dump or manages to run, then it's a simple task to use a smoke bomb to get away. For PvM, I only use this character for collecting feathers for my archer.

The archer-ninja
120 ninjitsu
80 stealth
100 hiding
120 archery
120 tactics
90 healing
90 anatomy

The main focus of this character is to dismount another player or run around in dog or wolf form. I never see one of these without a heavy crossbow in hand, as moving shot is the key to making an archer-ninja work.

The ninja-mage
90 ninjitsu
100 hiding
80 stealth
120 magery
120 evaluate intelligence
120 meditation
90 anatomy

This is an often used template for hunting things which are not easily accessible, such as when keying Travesty or the Dread Horn. The plan is to stealth to your enemy, cast an energy vortex or two and then hide. The higher value of ninjitsu is for more effective mirror images, and can be lowered to 50 if another skill besides anatomy is required (i.e. wrestling, resist, etc)

Ninja-parry-mage
110 Magery
110 Eval
120 Resist
120 Parry
100 Anat
80 Ninja
80 Med

This is a group PvP template, and is intended to stay alive while fighting the common archer-gank. The ninjitsu and parry combined with high DCI make this an almost unbeatable template when outnumbered by melee fighters and archers. Even when the hit is successful, the parry blocks 35% of the attacks and mirror images block another 50% of the attacks after that, meaning that while you can keep mirror images up, only 32.5% of your enemy's successful attacks will be successful, or 7 out of every 8 shots will miss (last calculation includes average hit chance failure against 45% DCI and eval int/anatomy defense chance). The down side of this technique is it lacks in offensive power, which is why it is a group template (and the group needs to be well coordinated).

Ninja-tamer
100 Ninjitsu
100 Hiding
80 Stealth
110 Magery
110 Taming
110 Lore
110 Vet

I must admit to having little experience with ninja tamers and am only really guessing at the template. I do know that the ninja tamer is more common on the Siege Perilous shard than on other shards due to the lack of passive reveal allowing the tamer to more effectively avoid death-by-player. The lack of meditation probably really hurts, especially when fighting things that have an area effect attack.

There are many many other effective ninja templates, both for PvM and PvP. Like most templates, few are effective in both arenas. This guide is just to give a good starting point and areas to look at when deciding how to make your ninja.
