Citizens of Britannia,

I wanted to share with you a significant change that is about to take place with the UO development team. Over the next several months, we'll be moving the team from its current location at EA's headquarters outside of San Francisco, CA to the EA Mythic studios in Fairfax, VA.

So what does this mean to you? This is a big move for the team, but we expect it to have very little impact on the game and community in the short term. Planned development and operations will continue with minimal interruption.

In the long term, we believe this move will be a big win for UO and will allow us to better support the game as we move into its second decade of operation. By having all three MMO teams together here in Virginia, we'll be better able to focus on Ultima Online’s development and ensure a long and lively future for the game.

Moving the UO team into the same studio that currently houses the Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online teams has other advantages as well. We'll be bringing a wealth of MMO experience together under one roof with a clear studio vision and strong leadership. This will benefit all three titles as we'll be able to share resources, experience and technology to continue to improve all of our games.

We know what UO means to you and it is as much a part of our lives as it is yours. For that reason, we are committed to the game's continued development, support and success. Moving the UO team to the EA Mythic studio will provide this most cherished game and its community with the love, attention and resources it needs to continue to grow and thrive.

Thank you,

Chris Rabideau

Goodbye UO

There is nothing to lose for me to post this and I admit I feel bitter, so why not let you know the truth?

Alot of the UO team was laid off today including me and all of QA.

We were escorted out of the building and not even allowed to email our goodbye email to everyone else. They even had managers watching us the whole time like we had done something wrong.

Most of the engineers are already working on Warhammer.

Most of the rest of the UO team is not going to Virginia. Only one person is moving fore sure and maybe one or two more are considering it too. That’s it. Almost all of the famous devs are not going.

Almost everyone on the list posted earlier by someone is not going to Virginia for sure.

Early December is when everyone who does not move to Virginia is laid off too.

I hope that something I did for UO is something that you found fun. We really did try to do our best.

Maybe I will see you all in another not EA game soon!

Some folk, quite rightly ask for more clarification that this wasnt a hoax

I just heard pretty much the same thing, it's confirmed for me that it's true. I'm really sad right now, I have been very optimistic about this game for so long, and now we're going to be losing almost all of our devs and others who have worked so hard on this game and know it better than a bunch of daoc and warhammer people. They (the daoc and warhammer people) may care about games and gaming, but the learing curve won't permit them to keep UO going like it needs.

Not to mention people I know losing their jobs over this. Do you think someone who really loves UO and loves to work on UO is going to want to go work on WoW or COH or something? Maybe, still gotta put food on the table. Ugh, what a mess.

I think this pretty much confirms it.

This explains alot about the silence from our new producer... however, this raises more questions then it answersfor me. When is the move going to happen, when/how will we find out who is and is not going to make the move? I've only been back about 6 months but have grown very fond of certain devs especially one whose sole purpose seems to be programming new ways to BLOW SH*T UP.

This is a process that will take a little while, and for most of us it was really just begun today - we won't have all the details settled for several weeks. The timing was also structured to get us through our next major publish with the smallest possible amount of disruption, although of course there will be some.

I just hope they keep events comming.

Don't mind them working on KR, but KR alone with no events is a real pain.

EA just spent gazilions according to a thread in Stratics where its being debated, Which means there making Cuts, I wonder if theyl drop the payment for The UO servers first? naaah LOADS of people still play that game, Surley it'l stay. :( There will always be stuborn people like me that will stay here till the end! *Darkion posting on Isys acc (My bro) *

It definitely means EA are making cut backs your correct Isanglor but as long as they replace those devs that were fired and keep events and {good} changes coming then we can't moan. I mean Aeribian is roit, look at the state of uo in the last few years with all this neon rubbish! Uo is a RP game but hardly any of the uo team in the last few years {save a couple} seem to have any idea of what uo as a RP game should be}.

To me, uo RP is kind of based on the real medieval world with a few elves, gnomes and monsters thrown in. Not people with bright flaming orange hair and blidingly bright yellow royal guard sash robes! Richard Garret, uo's maker, was a role-player, he knew what RP was, and that’s why uo was so good back in the day. Then came AoS and the new devs, who didnt seem to have a clue what RP is...

Bit of a problem in my opinion is that UO is heavily producer driven and the developers have to make the best out of it.

AOS was a try to diversify the game, make it loot driven where you build your character more and more, but lost all sense and balance in the time.

LBR was just a way to get the artwork for UO2 into the game as I think they had a contract with mc farlan to produce it.

SE was the realisation that the biggest market now is ASIA and what could they want and so samurai and ninjas were thrown in.

ML came in the wow time and they thought, lots of people like elves, we have some too, so we throw them in with he ugliest town we can build in five minutes and they will buy it.

Nothing against making money, but just trying to cash in with no story at all is what is killing UO. Halfbaked stories that drag out for months like INU, removal of EM's that made the game supposed to be a living world more stale, all those things hurt the playerbase a lot.

There is not really a better mmorpg out there now, but there sure are more fun mmorpgs out there and that is why people leave in my opinion.
