At this point, I would rule out Dwarves, Juka, and Meer, and Orcs (with dwarves being at the bottom of the list), but I would add Wisps to my list, as a result of the latest client update, and Gargoyles would be the top, with Ophidians an outside shot (we have been turned into Ophidians in the past, on the Halloween/Abyss shards so players as Ophidians is already doable - there would, of course, be logical limits, i.e. no mounts).

They are pushing Ultima V/VI/VII/UW2 hot and heavy with the latest update from last night, as well as some of the events in-game, and dwarves don't fit into any of that. I don't think they would take some of the most interesting parts of Ultima history and inject dwarves into it out of thin air (especially as Ultima VI and VII are some of the favorite Ultimas of some of the designers).

I want to play a Dalek then, on my spaceship which I'll decorate using the Onkyo entertainment system vet reward. I want a pink & green Chevelle to drive around in and an AK-47..no make that a glacial Steyr AUG..to drive to the 7-11 I want them to put in Luna?

How ridiculous need ridiculous be before...oh wait, we're long past that point already.

I want a big breasted elven woman named Firiona Vie to lead me on A to B to C quests as I look for Zelda.

I want to wield a pair of elven scimitars as I defeat the latest instanced dungeon "boss": Homer Simpson.

I want a bio-human character named Samus to blast things with.

And I can sit here and pull reasons out of my arse-of-infinity as to why it all "fits within the world of UO".

The world of UO doesn't exist anymore. Garriott made sure Starr Long made a backup of it to smuggle out of the Austin offices in his CD wallet. I hope very much that Tabula Rasa goes well for the creators of UO and when give them cause or reason to revisit the worlds they created.

In the meantime, if you're smelling something, it's probably the Targ dung from the Klingon expansion slated for 2008.

It's been..no wait..it was, fun.

I'm sorry but this is a debate thread not a 'grief because things should go my way' thread. So please stop whining because not everything goes everyones way. Dwarfs are not some thing from the far future. They're old fiction characters as old as anything in uo *creature based* Just because they were never important in the original series doesn't mean they cant add them in. Why grief? its something or nothing take what you can get and leave it at that until the next race is released.

p.s., I think uo should be more like WoW and less like uo [/sarcasm]

There is a strong possibility that the next playable race will be dwarves, but I hope the developers make it possible to design the dwarf character to look like a gnome, hobit, or even a mongbat(just joking with the mongbat.). Possibly due to their size, they will be a pain to manually target in pvp.

If they introduced Dwarves, would they also introduce a "Pony" so they could have something to ride without a step ladder? Its even possible they would they introduce a "griffin" or "steamship contraption" as something they could ride. Would "Dwarf only" clothing be much smaller?

I'm all for steamship contraptions. Golems finally get innovated into a ridable innovation! In fact this wouldn't be a bad idea.

Have tinkering make a strange craft *no not the xwing or the death star* as a mount, but since its used by a power crystal, its life span is extremely limited *maybe a day or so* and it cant attack and it can be destroyed if dismounted.

Dwarves and Gargoyles do have a reputation for craftsmanship and ingenuitiy, hopefully the Developers would bring that into game, through crafting bonus, or being able to reach tinkering 120(or similar skill associated with that race). Even being only able to make race specific items in addition to normal ones. There is alot potential, and I hope the Developers try to reach it, and get it past Quality COntrol. :)

What Terrance said is pretty much exactly how I feel about the matter as well. And put it nice and sharp as well so I didn't have to do it :)

I don't wanna go through the hair-pulling again that happened when elves were announced. Just say no to dwarves, every time you wish for a dwarf in the world god kills a vertically challenged person to make one and fails (but has a laugh so keeps trying).

Something to keep in mind about the elves. IMO they were not done to attract new players, for the simple fact that UO:ML was not setup to attract new players. It wasn't blasted all over magazine ads, there was no retail presence.

I don't know why Elves were picked. I have theories, but I always hear people say it was for new players, but that has no basis in reality, as UO:ML was not packaged for new players.

Because of that, I don't see dwarves being added to attract new players (and let's face it, Lord of the Rings Online will be rolling out in the not too distant future, and if people simply want dwarves, they'll go for that because that's the grandaddy of all worlds with dwarves).

I also don't see dwarves being added, because of the riding/mounts issue that others have mentioned.

Finally, they are doing a lot of work with Ultima history, something that is "sacred" with many players (especially many hardcore UO players). To toss in dwarves out of nowhere into an already-existing history would be upsetting to the very people that EA is going to be relying on helping sell Kingdom Reborn to other players (a Producer once said the players were UO's best marketers).

They really are working on putting more Ultima back in Ultima Online. Unlike the Samurai Empire expansion where everything about that came from a very vague time in Ultima history, the current storylines are very definitive.

Agnes Nutter is a character in the fantasy novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (1990)

She was a witch in the 17th century and the only real witch to have ever lived. She wrote a book called "The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch" which was a collection of prophecies which did not sell very well because they were unspectacular and all were true. She in fact decided to publish it only to receive a free exemplar as the author. There is only one book left belonging to her descendant Anathema Device. She was burnt at the stake by a mob (because that's what mobs did at that time). The burning caused her hometown to explode, as she had forseen this and packed gunpowder and nails into her coat.

The book is a comedy though. Well, that explains the Old Hag, eh? I think she poisoned Mongbats too... hehe... j/k

My agnes is much the same but more like granny weatherwax and a sprinkle of nanny ogg (she even has an evil kitty in the stables) With more than a little of my own grandma in the mix. and a bit of Cadsuane Sedai from WoT. But those are only a starting point for her personality. She is a fully developed Roleplaying character which I swiped the name from one of my favorite books. I had decided on Agnes and just couldn't think of a good last name and decided Nutter worked well so anyway....

Back on subject I am a little annoyed by all this back biteing over dwarves I hope they will be added and I don't need someone telling me that my hopes are stupid un uo like and how crappy what I want is.

DWARVES FTW!

I've always thought that dwarves would be a fine race to incorporate, for the very fact that they aren't an antagonistic race. Greedy and secretive and cheap, sure, but they are not going to kos you. Also, I agree that they could bring a great new element to the crafting skills, and maybe bring back warriors outside of archer/paly/samuri's. But heck, UO is an ever changing thing, so we'll see.

uoc brings up some good points. I'm leaning more towards the wingless gargoyles. I wonder if there's a casino nearby with the odds on this? Probably a 40-60 split between dwarves and gargoyles.

As much as I wish it is gargoyles, I won't get my hopes up just yet... after all, elves didn't make any sense either and we got them anyway.

I really really do hope the devs hold true to their current trend of sticking to Ultima lore and don't bring in friggin' hobbits or something.

elves were asked for before UO went live (in alpha and beta stages).... UO was created as a role playing game based on the Ultima games... the vast majority of role players at the time of UOs release did elves, dwarves.... Elves were simpler to add than dwarves..and were (elves) asked for by more players.... elves were part of the ultima game also long before UO was dreamed up.....so they did make sense and just didnt pop up out of no where

I can attest to that as well. The elves were asked for since day one before the game was released to the public. the decision to leave them out was not based on the "lore" of the game or any other game. Before anyone can ask were I heard that let me state again that I was actually there in the beginning its first hand knowledge.

I don't really care why they finally brought the Elves in but I am glade they did I like my elven archer and will welcome any addition they bring. I'm hoping for Dwarfs but I like the wingless gargoyle idea as well.

or maybe something in a mongbat ridding a polar bear wielding a bokuto!

I wouldn't mind seeing Dwarf, Orc, Gnome {For some really cool new tinkered items and maybe the intro of Tinkering Runics}, or Meer/Juka's. Either way I'm glad they are making it to where you have more choice then playing a human and trying to RP it to be an "Orc" or "Drawf" or whatever.

I really don't mind what we get. People are making a big deal about dwarves like they've never been in the ultima series or no ones asked for them before.

I remember back at the launch of aos people were asking for dwarves as a playable new race [elves as well]. Its the fact a lot of people don't remember way back when or they never played way back when or they just never played the series.

See, eventually UO will have a series of player races so does it really matter what gets implemented first? I think a lot of things would be cool to add in. My top picks are:

-dwarves (housing underground:shocked: )
-*winged* gargoyles. so they can hover over the ground like polymorph does.
-lizard men
-orcs
-*winged* daemon *slightly smaller version*

and maybe even a dragon/humanoid race.

Everygame has humans in it so I really don't see people arguing about that. Do humans make ultima un original because almost all mmos have human races? no. It doesn't matter what gets implemented because I'll say this again; Playable races don't make games original: Its the playstyle and build of the game that does. For example, Ultima has survived off of its unique 2d client for 9/10 years now. Most of the new games use the same 3d engine for graphic styles. Thats un-original. Ultima has the most unique game play allowing players to fight, explore, craft, thunt and build houses. What other game allows you to do that? The sims sure doesn't.

While everyone continues to rant until the "big" announcement, I'll just have to say that I'll be content with what ever race they give us.
