My first toon was my mage...

I had done some research, so I ended up with:
Magery
Eval Int
Med
Resist
Inscrip
Taming
Animal Lore
Vet

(BTW: My Taming, Lore and Vet are still pathetic!)

I can't remember exactly what my second (first character lived on Pac just a few hours, then changed to Atl) character had really back then in 1997. I remember though, that she had tailoring (buying bolts of clothes -> fancy shirts for a decent income), swords (going around with a nice helbard), magic (mainly for recalling and the odd e-bolt). In these days the skills weren't that linked to each other as they are nowadays, I think. You just picked what you thought would be nice and it worked out.

I used to have... uh...

Archery
Tactics
Fencing
Taming
Animal Lore
Camping
Anatomy
Healing

I experimented with a lot of stuff. Before I had discovered inns (and the fact that Tram wasn't Fel), I used to camp one character at W Brit Bank. I'd have him take everything off, unload his backpack into the bank, then logout. Then another character I spent hours and hours trying to find out how to train camping skill. Hehe!

I don't remember exactly but I am 100% sure that he had high tracking and camping and cooking. Outdoorsman so to speak. Had to have been 97 or 98.

I was a miner.

I didn't even know really what I was doing. My daughter and her boyfriend set me up. The pack horse was soon slaughter by some red dread lord in a mine I was going to mine in. That was in, like, 2003, I believe.

Miner
Smith
Not much else
but later came Tailoring
Tinkering
Carpentry
...and then....

I made Penny. And the UO world has never been the same.

Swords
Tactics
healing
Anatomy
Parry
magery (recall)
Med (probably although I dont know why since I wore plate armor back then)

I died more than I was alive on this char as I spent my first year of UO absolutely clueless on how to build characters and all that. Basically if a skill went up it went up ... later I figured out how to balance things but went in to taming and only learned more about dexers about 2.5 years ago.

Magery
Hiding
Meditation

Those were the only three skills I actually used and tried to raise. The rest was a hodgepodge of whatever seemed interesting at the time. I didn't know about the 700 point cap either, until I quit because of reverts and pks (pre-tram).
