As posted in the 6/13 FoF. We'll keep this stickied as a warning.

Warning: House Resizing

There Is A Known Issue With House Resizing At The Moment - If You Have Items In A Moving Crate And Resize Your House, The Moving Crate Goes "poof!" With All The Items In It. We Will Have A Fix For This In The Next Publish, But In The Meantime, Make Sure You've Emptied Your Moving Crate!

Also, Something To Keep In Mind - Your Ability To Place Your House Will Be Dependant On The *current* House Placement Rules. It's Possible That Some Older Houses Were Placed Under A Less-restrictive Set Of Rules, And If The House Is Demolished, The Original Square Footage (tileage?) Will No Longer Be Available According To The Current Rules. A Buffer Zone Is Required Of Five Tiles North And South, And One Tile East And West. Be Careful!

How do you "resize" your home without taking it completely down?

You can't. Using the resize command is the same as dropping your house - everything inside will fall to the ground and anyone walking by can just pick that stuff up.

What the resize command *does* do is prevent anyone else except you from placing a new home on that piece of ground for an hour. So, in essence, it allows you to "resize" your home by placing a new house plot on that location in a different shape/size without worrying about someone stealing the location for an hour.

Character and account age restriction of at least 15 days old still applies.

Thank you for your answer, Tancred. I will be sure to empty the contents of my home before attempting to resize

See you just can't trust North Felucca Moving Co. to do a proper job. The Orcs they hire either drink all the ale, kill and eat the live stock or don't empty the moving crate.
And then they have the nerve to ask for faction silver saying gold has devalued! :o

The warning from the UO staff doesn't cover the scenarios listed above.

Frankly, this resizing thing was one of the most poorly designed aspects to the game ever made. Load up all your banks... get a troop of packies... deed up all your regs and whatever-else. BUT this is the EASY part!

The failure, in the thinking process...

Ok. You take the house down, this area is still yours… for a little while. No one else can place in that space. Very good thinking. However, what the designers failed to understand is something as simple as markers. Scraps of wood with little bits of plastic ribbon on them. Set your lines (IN REAL LIFE) or… maybe see where the heck you actualy had a house just moments ago? Maybe a little white line only the house owner can see? This way if things go wrong, you can not get a bigger house to place, you have the ability to set a new plot in the exact same spot you just had a house. There is no line. No safty. Failure on the staff’s part, in by book… even though we are clearly not talking about the same staff. This was awhile ago.

Best suggestion I have is to mark your corners with something as easy to ignore as a few single regs. Not gold. Nothing that will stand out. Plus, always work as late as you can, so no one comes wondering by. This will take some of the stress off. Most rubbish will blow right on out of the way when the new house is placed. Doing this to get something as big as a keep or castle? I start pulling hair out. lol
