I agree with Veracose 100%, we don't know what to expect, and yes, that does mean Obama could be the last president.
As I said earlier, I truly hope I am wrong. It'd be best for all of us.
Thanks again Maddux!

This election was an emotional one for everybody. Never in my life have I been so tense about voting. My boyfriend and I actually got into a fight about it, because he did not vote. I called him a socially irresponsible worm before I calmed down and apologized.
Our country is in a bad position right now. The economy sucks. We are running out of fossil fuels. The huge baby boomer population is getting to an age where they should be able to retire, but they can't because they simply can't afford it. We are in a seemingly endless war on 'terrorism.' Obama's getting his chance now. He will have two options:
1) Lead this country out of the stinking mess and go down in history as one of the best choices ever made.
2) Lead us all straight to hell in a handbasket.
I'm having a hard time seeing any middle ground for him to walk on.
We are all broken and wounded in this world. Some choose to grow strong at the broken places.

I didn't feel tense about voting. For weeks it was clear to me that Obama would win, question only being by how much of a landslide.
Truthfully I didn't see either candidate as being ideal or the best choice for their respective parties, and so I voted with a heavy heart. Extreme left or extreme right, what to do.
Now that it is done, I will wait and hope for the best.
One thing Obama does seem to have though, is charisma. Whatever happens to the country, maybe he can inspire some much-needed hope. *shrugs*

I think the 'best or last' stemmed from the fact that so many of the purported changes Obama was pushing for and campaigning he would make, the only way those could happen would be to abolish the system as it is now and do something else, because the Legislative branch will NEVER allow a majority of what he wants.
Thanks Nev!

Part of the problem is that in order to get federal funding for campaigning, a party needs to get at least 5% of the popular vote in the previous election. Even so, campaigning costs much more money than is funded by the feds. McCain raised something close to $300 million, and Obama raised something close to $700 million. That is a LOT of money and in most cases, the candidates for those other parties just don't have the funding to spend that much campaigning. Thusly, I'm not at all surprised you haven't heard of the other candidates. They aren't all over TV (that costs money). They don't travel 4 or 5 states every day and hold big rallies to woo potential voters (that costs money too).
Rarely do the other parties (besides the Republicans and Democrats) get federal funding, even. A couple elections ago, I voted for Nader (who was running in the Green party at the time - He ran as an Independent this year). I didn't expect or even want Nader to win. I just didn't like the Dem or Rep candidates, and I wanted to try to help a third party get the 5% popular vote, to maybe give a third candidate a shot the next time around.
There ARE more than 2 people to choose from. They just don't campaign as prominently and therefore a whole lot of people don't know about them.
Here's a list of the people we had to choose from this year:
(Pres/VP, Party)
John McCain/Sarah Palin, Republican
Barack Obama/Joe Biden, Democratic
Chuck Baldwin/Darrell Castle, Constitution
Bob Barr/Wayne Allyn Root, Libertarian
Cynthia McKinney/Rosa Clemente, Green
Ralph Nader/Matt Gonzalez, Independent
Gene Amondson/Leroy Pletten, Prohibition
Róger Calero/Alyson Kennedy, Socialist Workers
Charles Jay/Thomas L. Knapp, Boston Tea
Alan Keyes/Brian Rohrbough, Independent
Gloria La Riva/Eugene Puryear, Socialism & Liberation
Brian Moore/Stewart Alexander, Socialist
Thomas Stevens/Alden Link, Objectivist | Exept that each state sets its own rules for getting on that states ballot. Kit, I take it that in Illnois where you reside all or many of those were on your ballot? Over in Indiana where I reside, we only have Democrate, Republican, and Independant Parties on our ballot. Each state is different so to make it very hard for any thrid party to get established nation wide. And that is the way that dems and repubs like it.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment

| Re: Who do you think it going to win the election? | |
I personally thank Obama will win (And has, since I'm repling to this late and all ) and that is also who I voted for cause to me he is the most intelligent and realistic of the candidates.
I for one can't call myself Democrat and I can't call myself Republican. Not really Green or Independent either, I'm just my own party really. I'm the "Michael Party" and I have my own ideals and opinions on things that could fit into some of the parts and then disagree with some of the parties. It has nothing to do with commitment to one part or another I'm just one of those individuals that has always been a loner. Even back in school I wasn't part of a clique but was friends with all of them.
The reason I personally voted for Obama is cause he's an intelligent, charismatic, well spoken, and confident man that holds himself well in the public eye in my opinion. I like his ideals on being able to do community services to get a kick back on your schooling. I myself am pro choice and could care less what anyone thinks of me for that, cause it's better to be pro choice then to have teen girls cramming coat hangers in themselves or finding babies in dumpsters imho. Cause lets face it humans are a free thinking species and we're going to do what we want regardless of the thoughts of other cause at the end of the day it's only got to be "Right" in our minds for it to be so. Of course then again I'm also one of those people that think if your suffering from a cancer and whatnot really bad and having to be hooked up to machines to live that you should have the choice to be assisted to the next world. If I ever get put in a vegetative state I want them to pull the plug, I don't want to waste peoples time to take care of me when it would be cheaper and less time consuming to just let me go. Instead of being a waste of space that's good for nothing but drooling and crapping on myself.
I like the fact that Obama is down to earth and willing to kick back a beer with the people and even if he weren't president/running I could see myself being friends with and hanging out with the man.
I agree with his stance on the fuel crisis, cause if people would pay attention and not be ignorant Obama ISN'T against drilling he just feels that it would be more cost effective to go other routes that will 1. Take care of our energy needs and 2. Create a lot more jobs then that of putting up a few more Oil drilling stations. There is a LOT of stuff that other countries see that we don't and honestly most of the rest of the world wanted Obama to win cause. Honestly I think it would be best to elect the person the rest of the world likes cause if the rest of the world already likes him it would be easier for that person to work out foreign relations.
Another reason I voted on him but surely not the soul reason obviously is he was the only candidate that was for online gambling. Said he even plays some online poker himself sometimes, I myself am a poker player but don't have the time to do the casino hoping since I live in Ohio where they yet again rejected a bill to get a Casino in Ohio :/.
Not to mention the man opened up the eyes of a man I respect a lot in my life. My Grandfather (by marriage but he was the one there all my life) who is a conservative racist (What I mean by conservative racist is that he thinks someone negatively of black people but he is willing to work along side them and all that good stuff but doesn't believe in interracial dating and stuff like that.) and dying of cancer voted for Obama. When a man that openly uses the N word in a negative manner can see past the color of someones skin for who they are and vote for the values of the person that's saying something.
In essence I don't think DiP will be able to say "I told you so" cause honestly I think Obama will really impress us. We've only seen a little bit of what the man can do and I think he be listed in with the greats like Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, etc....
At the end of the day least I can honestly say that I wasn't one of the ones that voted for the "Not Black" one. Ignorant idiots *shakes head*.
^Note that I have nothing against McCain and think he is a very good man and have a lot of respect for what he's done in his life. I just don't like those people that voted for him cause he wasn't black and completely ignored the issues.

I hope you're right Tov.
I disagree on saying his charisma is a positive thing though.
I knew Obama would win when Obama girl made her first video, everything else that followed just feasted on everything else wrong in the U.S.
Thanks again Maddux!

I know in IL we had options for the Green, Independent, Constitution, and Libertarian parties (plus the Democrats and Republicans).

I'm not ignorant I know that my 1 little vote didn't tip the scales and win the election for him. Heck it didn't even tip the scales in my county, McCain won my county...even though Obama took all the big counties giving him the Ohio.
I personally voted for the person I could relate most with and Obama was that person. For the most part I was looking more at the VP Candidates then the President ones. Cause not only do you have to pick the right guy for the presidency you have to make sure their right hand person is good enough in your opinion to run the country should anything happen to the person elected.
Palin in my eyes was a twit that imo is probably a closet racist but then again that's my opinion. Not to mention I don't think the CURRENT world in essence (Not including Britains Queen) is ready for a female leader or VP cause of the views on women to the rest of the world. How is a woman VP suppose to get anything done on Foreign politics if the person they have to communicate with is someone who's faith/stand point on women is nothing more then baby makers and sexual slaves.
This was personally my 1st year voting ever, I'm 25 so I've been able to vote for 8 years now but have never gave it a 2nd thought. Hell the only reason I voted this year is cause my GF is pretty heavy into politics and I figure why not I have an opinion might as well go black in a bubble. I've always had an idea of who I wanted to win ever since I knew was politics was when I was younger. Like for example, I didn't want Bush to win the first time he was elected let alone a 2nd term lol.
Anyway I've got to get ready for work so I'll come have heated debates later .

Just have to add, I can gaurantee there were more votes for Obama because he is black than there were for McCain because he is not black.

Sadly though, this country (and world as a whole) is still dumbly and idiotically full of racist jackholes that do make the skintone of a person a deciding factor in life, so in a sense, you're both right.
And I heard a caller on the radio this morning argue and cuss at the djs because he couldn't believe, and would NOT believe, 'there's a (expeletive deleted) in the White House?!' because he spent the night in jail drunk and couldn't view the election results for himself.
Thanks Nev!
