UOForums Interviews Silverfoot.
Silverfoot was kind enough to take some time out to answer your questions.
Here's a brief history of Silverfoot's experience with UO
Quote:
Started in beta late August 1997. Finally got my collectors edition and logged in officially on 10/1/1997. First official shard was Atalantic, it was crazy. As Soon as Chesepeake opened we moved there. Got involved with a guild which included 3 of my brothers and formed a smaller village called Tenakill out side of Yew, north on the the road from Pax Lair. We also settled in the same spot on Siege when it opened, which gave us a nice dual shard same spot set-up. I think we had at least 8 homes, smalls, the tavern
a 2 story large.. Hunting was fun and battling PK's was fun. Well until they decided it was more a 24/7 situation.
Back then you had a lot of folks involved with playerrun towns such as Pax lair, located just over the the bridge north of the great desert. Corwyn, just outside Skara Brae crossing., Silvervale near the crossroads from Brit to Vesper. and others. A lot of them had great interest in actually running the towns and having events, auctions, tavern nights. PK raids every night ruined it. Down the road Trammel was born of that type of stuff. If you got killed and lost the keys to your house. You were screwed. PK's would go there en masse and carry everytihng away, while you yet died again.
Trammel was another story. We as a group decided to make the jump. We had found the shorline south of Trinsic on the very tip of the world. We picked out a cove and got 2 towers placed and at least 6 other homes placed. We had our whole guild placed in one area. Great!....revert 6 hours or so later I won't mention the time spent waiting for the serve to pop up. I mean it was first come first served. We took off the next day from work as a group (laughs) and for the jump the following day. In again, we place again, this time a tower and about 4 other spots. damn...OK....revert. Talk about frustrations. In any case we ended up getting a number of homes placed and had a great time.
I then got involved with the founding of Iantown on Siege which I'm still involved in today. I'm also part of the UO:F guild on Lake Austin. A great bunch of folks who populate this forum.
Lots of folks in other games now from my Chesepeake days., I still talk to them as I'm part of a gaming guild called The Fellowship (TFS) A number of folks left with game issues, most are still searching for that mecca of online gaming.
Was one of the first MODS hired for the MYUO boards, with about 20 others. by the old CR Melantus, say about 2000, about 1 year into it they decided on hiring a inside person (Greywolf) and 2 other paid MODS, SilverOne (myself) and a guy in europe, I'm going to say Kasper was the name, but might be wrong on the name. At the end of the MYUO boards it was Greywolfe and myself.
I then went on to do a bit of stuff at the Ianstorm.com It was at Ianstorm that a group of folks put together Iantown on Siege which was a fun place for about 3 years, it's a bit quiet now
UOForums was another stepping stone to a great guild put together by a bunch of boardies (UO:F) .
Great stuff . To me it's always been about the people you play with and the amount of fun you can have. I've never skilled to earn a a GM, I've always played my charecters gain as they may during the normal course of play.

Now onto the interview..
Since you entered the world of Sosaria at its creation and mostly this game is about interaction with fellow players and "friends" for you do you find as this game evolves, and dissolves in many ways, do you find it hard to adjust to the fact that many long-time "friends" are just not there anymore?
Many player run towns are just ghost towns now as acct holders still keep accts active yet rarely log in for more than mere seconds.
Have you experienced this "depressing" side and if so how do you manage to stay involved? Well yes I've experienced it especially with my brothers leaving, but one needs to find a game that fits your lifestyle and playstyle best.
My brothers can grind levels with the best of them I hate it. As far as friends, I don't think I've lost those I consider real friends. I still talk to them about gaming in general, a lot of them have met me for dinner or been to the house during thier RL travels. I truly enjoy meeting all these folks from various backgrounds. People come and go, it happens in RL.
I'm old enough to know that you only really maintain contact with a very small group from either high school or college. Life moves us all down our own paths, sometimes it intersects breifly with anothers path, some times you meet folks for a breif period, sometimes you meet folks that make an impact on you. I truly love the interaction, perhaps that's why I MOD. *shrugs*
MY UO life seems to repeat itself when it comes to "town" projects. It really takes special people to make this work, and a lot of work it tis! The early days on Ches saw me interacting with our own small village (Tenakill) and travelling a lot to Pax Lair and Corwyn. Doing some work on the Ianstorm site saw me hook-up with a bunch of boardies looking for the next level of fun, which turned into Iantown on Siege.
It had a great run for about 4 years. Now I find myself again joining a bunch of boardies from UOForums on the LA shard on Mithril Isle and the UO:F guild.
Perhaps that is the greatness of UO, the depth of the game provides us the ability to go out and MAKE our own fun.
What is the best improvement you've seen in UO over the years?
Seriously, the improvement in lag. Hands downs. I spent a lot of months during the early years doing 2 steps forward, 1 step back very frustrating. There are so many other improvements that are great but if I had to narrow it to one, this would be it.
What is the worst improvement you've seen in UO over the years?
Trammel. but not in the way you would think. The need for it was absolute, the way they went about it was wrong in one main aspect. The Old lands should have remained and been "Trammel" and the new "mirrored"lands should have been "Feluccia". This would have left so many player run towns intact and viable. It was impossible to rebuild these towns in the Trammel land rush.
What is your favorite Dungeon? or place to hunt?
I like all the different dungeons in UO, once again gives a lot of variety. But being old school, I love fighting dragons and orcs! So I guess Destard and the Orc Caves.
What is your favorite character to play? What are his skills? I really am boring, I have a version of Se'an Silverfoot on each shard. And he's basically the same. Archer with healing abilities. I've never made him to any template, just to what I imaginied his background to be.
How did you come about choosing the name Silverfoot - Se'an?
Se'an is my middle name and my son's first name. Silverfoot was my feeble attempt at a fantasy type last name. It is a char name I have used since the The Realms and have used in some form in every fantasy genre game I play
Do you have any crafter characters? If so, which ones and which would you say is your favorite? Yes, I have a couple Torin SIlverfoot on Ches, a GM smith and my favorite is "Lameth" on the LA shard. He's a GM Fisher, GM Tinker, GM Carp, we're currently adding bowcraft/fletching so he can support Se'an
Do any of your family members still play?
Nope, only one left is me. Back 1997 thru 2000 I had all three of my brothers playing all on Ches shard. They headed to the land of glitter (WOW, EQ, etc.) None currently play online games, knowing them they will be back to gaming at some point, basically thier in that stage of family life where time is at a premium. My kids are grown so I'm in a different league :-P
What is your favorite type of characters to play with? Archer, half-elf or elf. Hey I'm boring! To this day I've never played a tamer! Hell who wants to cleanup after those pets!
What was your first guild and how were you treated? TFS (The Fellowship) on Ches. There was about 12 of us to start, including my brothers. One of the greatest things to happen to me in gaming was real just a very simple thing. The ability for us to buy a house, build some tables and chairs and then sit there, in game and have a guild meeting. For some reason I will never forget that first house and meeting.
Great bunch of guys and gals in TFS, most of which I still talk to today. TFS is basically a gaming guild, not game specific. I had played with a number of them from The Realm and then LOE. They are now spread out over different games.
If you can remember after your first week of playing uo when you turned off your computer what wereyour thoughts..?
1 i can't believe the servers are going down for a bit let me get cofee and wait
2. the game is cool but i have alot to learn i will probley log back on after the weekend of hanging out with friends or
3 this sucks but im bored and mabey i will get the hang of it.
Probably closer to #1, I was just blown away by the ability to play in a world with the size and scope of UO. Unheard of at the time. The hardest thing was learning to get over getting PK'd. Once I learned how to handle those situations I was, well just addicted to the game. Besides getting to play with my brothers online was just a blast!
Which shard do you prefer to play on? Regular shards or Seige? And why?
Actually both depending on my mood. I currently play with UO:F on the LA shard and WAKA on Siege. Playing both allows me to keep my play style options open.
Many thanks Silverfoot for a great interview!

Do you remember "Father Time" from Ches? He used to be a fountain of player news on Ches. Great guy. I remember our tavern in Tenakill being the place he stopped by during his travels and wrote a piece on. Great RPer.
