Other People's Mail

This is a trival thing..obviously not a life stopper...but we all have those small daily annoyences. This is one of mine.

Other people's mail.

We all know rentals have huge turnovers...and I can deal with the occasional piece of mail to the wrong address. But I say this I say write "not at this address" on....*counts*....12 peices of mail. And that is just from the last two weeks.

Same people...I believe the people who lived here before us. Did they not tell anyone they moved? At Christmas we recieved tons of Christmas letters and cards to these people....ummm....

Pay the money, walk to the post office and put in an address change to have your mail forwarded. Especially in a rental unit. Ugh.

*goes back to writing on the envelopes and sending them back*

Re: Other People's Mail

You know, just yesterday, we got mail for the guy who lived at my house 2 people ago. We bought the house 3 1/2 years ago, and still get the out of date mail. WTF is that! In America, it is FREE to change your address!! Last Christmast we got a box from someone to our previous tenants. I was about to open it, when they came and asked about it. They were still close with our neighbors and knew it was coming. That really pissed me off, they knew it was coming and just let it go. They were soo close to losing their presents! hehe..

Re: Other People's Mail

It's free to change your address there?? Well hell..that's even better!

It's like $20 here...and they will do it for 3 months...if you want longer you can pay a bit extra. I can't imagine not forwarding my mail...there is always somewhere that I forget to change the address.

It really bothers me though that we get mail from what I can only assume is family members. (Same last name and from the same area as us). That bugs me the most ...

Re: Other People's Mail

I had to actually catch my mailman one day and inform him of who lived here. Not only were we getting other people's mail, he was sending OUR mail back as not at this address! This was after the change of address too. What a moron.

I ended up writing out our names and taping them to the inside of the mailbox so he sees them every time he delivers.

Re: Other People's Mail

Wow Adri..that's crazy.

It's against the law for letter carriers here to do stuff like that on their own will. They have to deliver to the address regardless of what name is on it, unless they have forwarding cards.

I'd kick his butt if he was sending my mail back! hehe

Re: Other People's Mail

hmmm... I just throw it all away.

Law says I don't have to forward it, and if it was delivered to ME, and I don't want it... well, trash it goes.

I don't even shred it like I do my unwanted stuff, I just put it in the bin, so any dumpster diver can steal their identity.

But your right, people should file change of addresses, and 90% of billing departments will take that info over the phone. People are just lazy, or trying to escape the bill collectors.

Re: Other People's Mail

Yeah I despise other peoples mail. Its easy enough to get all the information changed. I got all my info changed and Andy changed hers when we moved into our apartment... we've gotten.... 1-2 pieces of mail MAX at our old addy.

If I get mail for the neighbor right before me (Frank) then Ill hold it for 2 weeks or a month to see if he comes lookin for it... if not, Ill trash it. Anyone elses mail is trashed. We do get a bunch of free magazines and whatnot though from previous tenants having subscriptions.

Re: Other People's Mail

Well (if it's the same laws in the US) you have right to trash it. At least in Canada. Once it is delivered to your door you can do what you want with it, except for open it. Open it, and you can go to jail. But you do have all rights to throw it away.

I just can't do that. I rely too much on some of my mail and it would kill me if someone threw out something that was delivered wrong, because sometimes mistakes happen. So just so karma doesn't bite me in the ass...I send it back. hehe

Re: Other People's Mail

Me and the wife always just write "does not live here" on it and throw it back in the box. I have been tempted to open stuff before. Something came in the mail having to do with the courts prison system thing. I was thinking the last tenant was some sort of ex-con or something. hehe. turned out it was just some sort of ticket he didnt pay.

Oh, won't dispose of neighbors stuff, that happens a lot.
But someone from 100 years ago? Good way to light the bon-fires.
