Dang...so they managed to find a way to prosecute war drivers. How many times have I pulled into a hotel parking lot that had wireless internet to check work email...

I have a wireless network, and luckily from my point of view,knew this could be done.I was shown where to prevent anyone in the,local area from piggy backing onto my network.

I did actually 'see' some one connected to my network at one point just long enough till I put the prevention in place.

If you install a system though and dont check out all you need to do,to keep it protected,as the barber didnt,should not a portion of the blame then be be on him?

Its not as though the guy was hacking the barbers PC, then again, I guess some clever person,would find a way to hack using that method.

All this technology,is all well and good,but it needs thoroughly checking out before using.

Look at the problems with Blue tooth for example.

Agreed. If you leave it open, then that is an invitation. If you don't want anyone on your network, place safe guards. If safe guards are in place and someone hacks it, then prosecute. Until then, your own darn fault!

For the record. The barber called because someone was parked everyday and didn't get out. The cafe had the wireless and wasn't worried about it. Seems to me if she didn't care then neither should the police/prosecuting attorney

Doesn't someone have to be the complainant? i.e., the cafe? If they don't have a problem with it, then case dropped, right?

No, breaking a law regardless if there is a complaintant is still breaking the law. It would end up being the state against the guy if it were to go to court.

Of course, if this were a perfect world, it wouldn't be the guy's fault because there were no controls over who got on to the network. But then again, if you leave your door unlocked and someone walks in not welcomed, is that still not trespassing?

Although using wireless is pretty pointless right now, it's so easily hacked/broken into.
I've stopped using it, because someone kept hacking into our router to gain access, even with WPA setup, it still isn't full proof
It's only when I did a search on google and discovered just how easy it is

Crack wep passwords in as little as 3 minutes? Jeesh

So i'm back on wired (Ethernet over powerlines to be precise)
