Extreme drought conditions hitting southern England

Yay

Much like global warming, people are oblivious and ignorant to the problem and don't give a damn
People still go outside and use their hoses and sprinklers despite bans

The south is suffering it's worst drought in 100 years, it's so extreme right now, we're down to about 30% in water supplies and spring/summer is fast approaching.

It's scary in some ways, they're thinking of rationing water, by putting standpipes in the streets and cutting off normal water supplies

Quote:
Water shortages in the South East have become so extreme the Environment Agency wants five new reservoirs to be built in the next 25 years.

Reservoirs which would normally be more than 90% full in February are standing less than 40% full after more than a year of drought conditions.

Rainfall for January in the South East was about 25% of the average level.

Bewl Water, Southern Water's largest reservoir, is 37% full, when the firm would expect it to be 92% full in a normal February.

It's two winters now where we haven't had enough rain isn't it?

They keep putting pictures of those reservoirs on the news, they look almost empty

Re: Extreme drought conditions hitting southern England

Over here we aren't much better off. We have been under drought conditions for months, and it seems like half the state is on fire.

Re: Extreme drought conditions hitting southern England

The problem is though even if we have the wettest winter/spring/ summer for the next 'x' years its not going to improve mattersvery soon .
Its going to take years to put it right.

Also the average householder is not solely to blame. What about the millions upon MILLIONS of water that is seeping away throught leaking pipes?
At least householders are using the water to water gardens/plants ,taking baths etc.

Why dont the Government penalise the water companies who are causing the effect of global warming to have even worse consequences on us ie not enough water or us to use freely?

Re: Extreme drought conditions hitting southern England

Well they have already said that within the next ten years we are going to reach the tipping point. Meaning if we don't start accepting some responsibility soon, within ten years, it won't matter what we do, because things will have gone past the point where they could be repaired.

As it is, we have damaged the earth enough so that every natural disaster is going to just get bigger and worse. Predictions say that within 5 years hurricane Katrina is going to look like a mild wind. This goes for everything. Droughts, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, all of it.

Then again, if you are really religious like my mom (she has gotten to the point of being weird about it lately tho) then you believe there is nothing we could do anyway, and this is the beginning of the end of the world. Of course, every generation since recorded history has thought they would see the end of the world.
