Drunken toddler found, babysitter charged

Damn, imagine finding out your babysitter got your 2 year old drunk?

Quote:
PATCHOGUE, New York (AP) -- A 37-year-old man was charged with child endangerment after one of two toddlers he was baby-sitting was found drunk, authorities said.

Suffolk County sheriff's deputies investigating a family court case peered through the window of a Patchogue home Tuesday and saw Juan Reyes passed out with the children wandering around the house.

They managed to rouse Reyes, who was the only adult at home with the two toddlers, ages 2 and 3, according to the sheriff's office. The deputies said Reyes appeared extremely intoxicated.

The deputies also noticed the 2-year-old was having difficulty standing, had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and was lethargic.

The toddler was taken to the hospital, where tests revealed he was legally intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol content of 0.094 percent, the sheriff's office said. In New York, a driver is considered drunk with an alcohol content of 0.08 percent or greater.

The second child was taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.

At the time, the children's parents were at a hospital, where the mother was giving birth.

Reyes was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip and ordered held on $5,000 bail. He was scheduled to return to court on January 3.

Robert Clifford, spokesman for the Suffolk County district attorney, said the children's family lives at the house where the toddlers were found. Reyes also gave that as his address during his arraignment.

The district attorney's office said Reyes was being represented by the Legal Aid Society. Calls to the society went unanswered Wednesday evening.

Are you kidding me? $5,000 bail for intentially endangering a child? They have stiffer laws about injuring an animal on purpose than harming a child. What a mess.

Re: Drunken toddler found, babysitter charged

When I was around 4 years old, my mom tells me a story how we were all at a family birthday party at my aunt/uncles house...there were soda/beer cans littering the coffee table and since this was summertime, people were in and out of the house a lot. apparently i got into the 'soda' (what i thought was soda) by drinking out of the cans on the table. I don't think i was 'drunk' exactly but me stumbling around (i was only 4) was apparently funny at the time. I'm not going to be mad about it now, but if i actually remembered much from when i was four, i don't think i'd have liked running into walls and being laughed at.

But seriously, this situation is much more serious...did he fall asleep and the kid got into his drink, or did the guy deliberately have the kid drink it? I read that and didn't find that out anywhere. Either way the guy is responsible for the childs state of drunkenness. Very sad...and that he was 'living' there at the time and the family didn't know?

I got drunk at 18 months old...but thats cause my dads side are alcoholics and i was sipping everyones drink...anywho

I think its disgusting that a grown man got a young child drunk. He should be beaten severely.

You forget, in today's society, pets and other animals are more highly valued than children. You want response to something like this, change the story to say a dog was left chained to a doghouse without water or food for a week.. the whole state's animal activists will be down someone's throat for it. A child has to actually die before anyone usually notices: a sad indictment on our country's morals and ethics, I think!

That is insane. I cant imagine giving my kid booze. Of course the punishment is never fitting to the crime.
