Chip shop Connie's 100th birthday

Awh, hehe

Chip shop Connie's 100th birthday

This is her life, so she needed to be in the shop, even though it's her birthday

Glenys, daughter-in-law

A 100-year-old woman has celebrated her landmark birthday by working at the fish and chip shop she opened nearly 80 years ago.

Connie Brown, who became an MBE last year, arrived at Brown's in Pembroke at 9am, as she does six days a week.

She and her late husband Sidney opened the Pembrokeshire cafe in 1928.

The steady stream of well-wishers during the day were offered a glass of wine and a piece of birthday cake along with their fish and chips.

Mrs Brown was taken to the nearby Lamphey Court Hotel for a birthday meal on Sunday, the only day in the week the shop is closed.

The great-grandmother of four said: "I'm overwhelmed with it all and can't believe I've reached 100.

"I am quite happy to work and I'll keep doing it until I can't work any more."

On a typical day, she arrives at 9am to cut up fish, works for an hour before going home, then returns at 11am to cook for customers until 2.30pm.

She then has another break before returning at 4pm to finish service for the day and close the shop.

Her husband died in 1964 at the age of 59, but the Main Street shop has remained a family concern.

Her daughter-in-law Glenys, 67, who helps run Brown's with her husband Hilton, 71, and son Steve, 44, said: "Everyone's been flooding in with cards and flowers. It's been wonderful.

"She's been trying her best to work as normal today. This is her life, so she needed to be in the shop, even though it's her birthday.

"Working keeps her going. If she was ever to stop, it would finish her.
"It keeps her mind active, and it's her routine."
