Bush approval rating hits new low

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — President Bush's approval rating has slumped to 31% in a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, the lowest of his presidency and a warning sign for Republicans in the November elections.

The survey of 1,013 adults, taken Friday through Sunday, shows Bush's standing down by 3 percentage points in a single week. His disapproval rating also reached a record: 65%. The margin of error is +/- 3 percentage points.

"It is a challenging political environment," acknowledges Tracey Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, "but we are confident that ultimately voters in November will recognize that a Democrat Congress would simply not be equipped to ensure either economic or national security for our nation."

Bush's fall is being fueled by erosion among support from conservatives and Republicans. In the poll, 52% of conservatives and 68% of Republicans approved of the job he is doing. Both are record lows among those groups.
Moderates gave him an approval rating of 28%, liberals of 7%.

"You hear people say he has a hard core that will never desert him, and that has been the case for most of the administration," says Charles Franklin, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin who studies presidential approval ratings. "But for the last few months, we started to see that hard core seriously erode in support."

Only four presidents have scored lower approval ratings since the Gallup Poll began regularly measuring it in the mid-1940s: Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter and the first George Bush. When Nixon, Carter and the elder Bush sank below 35%, they never again registered above 40%.
Truman twice sank into the low 30s and then rose into the 60s, but the third time his rating fell, it stayed below 40% as well.

"Historically it's been pretty devastating to presidents at this level," Franklin says. Even Republican members of Congress are "now so worried about their electoral fortunes in November that he has less leverage with them than he normally would with his own party controlling Congress."

Well. Like father like son. I honestly can not believe his approval rating is still that high. I had the displeasure of serving under the first Bush. Glad I'm not still in the service!

I'd tell you what I really think of him...but Homeland Securtiy might come visit me.

Why does the term Homeland Security remind me of the Fatherland? During his first term my daughters teacher called him Adolph Bush I knew I liked that lady for some reason.

Re: Bush approval rating hits new low

This may be a dumb question, but why does anyone really care about his approval rating at this point? It's not like he can run for re-election, so what difference does it really make? Just curious what other people think because when I read stuff like this, I really don't care. But, that's just me, maybe another point of view would change my mind...nah, probably not

I agree.. I really don't care either.. although, i think it would be great if his approval rating actually dropped to zero... hmm maybe i can bet on that somewhere. .. seriously tho, this is why politics is so stupid everyone is so focused on this stupid approval rating when there are so many more issues that could and should be given the attention..

I've never figured out how to be gracefully humble without appearing weak.

Nor have I figured out how to be gracefully passionate without appearing arrogant.

In the end, I always seem to be arrogant and weak instead of humbly passionate.

Re: Bush approval rating hits new low

Think about it this way, if his approval rating drops low enough Republicans will be lower in the polls come election time.
As for his presidency....they had a hearing about President Clinton's "Indiscretions" in Office, but they don't do anything about this president....what a great legal system.

Any time that comparisons of our current administration are made to Nazi Germany, all it does is shut down discourse. In truth, the fascism came during the Clinton years, when FBI files on enemies were kept in the White House, and jackbooted thugs dispatched to murder the wives of war heroes (Ruby Ridge) and tanks deployed to exterminate religious cultists (Waco). Arresting a few Jihadis here and there domestically doesn't even compare.

As for your daughter's teacher, if she is teaching such things in the classroom, she should be FIRED.

Re: Bush approval rating hits new low

I don't care what his approval rating is. We finally have a President that is willing to take a hard stance and people start balking. Comparisons made between Hitler and Bush or the current administration and Nazis are terrible and unfounded. You can keep your opinions about him and his administration, that is your right. But, if you really want to complain about what is going on then do some thing proactive and stop talking tough. Join the border patrol, join the military, join the peace corps...quit your job at McD's or Walmart and get into what the real world is about. It isn't easy, it is hardly safe and the current administration is doing the best it can with all the incompetence that currently surrounds the white house, to include those politicians outside of the oval office...all of them, Republican, Democrat ... whatever the hell else there is.

Re: Bush approval rating hits new low

When it comes to things like unemployment, welfare, and poverty, big government is always talking about accountability. People should be held accountable. Funny how no one wants to be held accountable when the administration broke the law with illegal wiretapping. People who break the law... from a homeless bum up to the president... should be held accountable for their actions. When the people who are sworn to uphold the law begin to think themselves ABOVE the law, then we no longer have a democracy. In the meantime, our personal freedoms are being eroded away day by day in the name of 'homeland security.'

Re: Bush approval rating hits new low

I don't think the British Prime minister or goverment will be reelected in the next general election, had to many scandals recently which seems to have eroded their support.
Although the new conservative leader looks promising.
