60 puppies die in Mass. tractor-trailer fire

Oh god, how sad (

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14360161/

LOWELL, Mass. - A trailer carrying dozens of puppies to Northeast pet stores caught fire just off an interstate, killing all of the estimated 60 dogs inside, authorities said.

The driver first noticed smoke coming from his trailer just before 5 p.m. Monday, state police said. He pulled over, and the Lowell Fire Department put out the flames that engulfed the trailer, but they couldn’t save the puppies.

The puppies were a variety of breeds between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks, according to a state police news release.

Neither the driver, identified as Joseph Price, 40, of Joplin, Mo., nor his passenger, William Iriarte, 50, of Nesho, Mo., was injured.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a malfunctioning fan in the rear of the trailer may have started the fire, police said. No charges have been filed.
The truck was owned by the Hunte Corp. of Goodman, Mo., a major puppy supplier for pet stores.

“The puppies were all beautiful, healthy purebreds that were on their way to quality retailers in the northeast and eventually to loving New England families,” the company said in a statement. The company said it has a near-perfect safety record.

I always find it a bit disturbing how cute/good looking life forms somehow hold more value than less pleasing ones...

... like, had this been some spiders or some snakes folks most likely wouldn't give a crap. But omg puppies, you can't kill puppies 'cause they're cute... well piggies are cute too and are slaughtered daily en masse.

Accidents are sad always, but just 'cause it was puppies doesn't make it somehow more so.

"I always find it a bit disturbing how cute/good looking life forms somehow hold more value than less pleasing ones..."

Not always entirely true. Tons of people were up in arms, and still are, after this happened:
Quote:
A truck driver was injured and thousands of turkeys were killed Monday when a vehicle hauling the birds overturned on a farm-to-market road.

The truck, carrying a load of 6-week-old birds from a brood farm to a turkey-growing farm for Cargill Foods, overturned when the driver attempted to make a turn, slipping across the intersection of FM 933 and FM 1304 in Hill County, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Rich Medina said.

The driver, 33-year-old Timothy Carnes, suffered cuts and bruises and was airlifted to a hospital as a precaution.

Many of the dazed turkeys scattered into the woods, and some were later captured by Cargill Foods workers, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported in a story for its Tuesday editions.

Cargill's agriculture manager, Ira Brister, said it was too early to tell what the financial cost of the loss would be for Cargill. Healthy surviving birds were hauled to the farm, company officials said, and injured birds were euthanized.
Young turkeys aren't exactly cute lol. It has, however, brought up a lot of questions as to the humane treatment of these things, and transportation.

Adrianna
I think it has to do with the fact that they were domestic animals, and not wild natured creatures. People tend to think of dogs/cats as family members, hence the concern over it. I dont think it has to do with the fact that they were cute cuddly puppies.

Ya know it is very sad that they did have to die that way and if it were any living creature id still say it was sad
I wish petstores would cut out the selling of certian animals and help local Animal control/shelters adopt off the animals that get tossed out daily
i will never buy a pet i will go adopt one or get one from someone who has too many to care for

Wow.

I gotta give credit to the lot of you, I was expecting to get my head bitten off after that last post... come on, you can't dis puppies. It's just not done

So thanks for the constructive comments, I think the whole family member thing has a point. And the turkey incident, though not a happy occasion by any means, gives me a bit more faith in people. Good to know folks still do care even when it's not their own family or friends or some supposedly adorable critter in question.

for me, its not that it was an adorable critter - it was just some random accident that killed life. I am glad to hear though the drivers were not injured but I bet they gotta feel like crap

Agreed, which is why I posted it.
I would've done the same if it were snakes, chickens, pigs etc
Yes pigs get slaughtered everyday, but they aren't burnt to death.
