The Magpie who had no Tail ~ Indian Folktale Once there was a baby magpie, called Kiki, who lived high up in a tree in a nest, with his mother and father, brothers and sisters. Mrs Magpie had a beautiful black and white coat and a lovely long tail, and as her babies grew bigger they looked as grand as she did. All except poor Kiki. He was big and strong, but his tail never grew. So poor Kiki was very sad for he wanted to love them all. He did so wish they would love him. One day when the baby birds were big enough to climb out of the nest and stand flapping their wings on the branch, Mrs Magpie said: "Now, babies, be good and stay in the nest. I am going to the other side of the garden, to get some tasty worms." But as soon as she had gone, the naughty magpie babies climbed out on to the branch. Now Kiki, who was very clever, could fly a little. He looked down to the ground and there he saw, to his horror, that Fluffy, the Persian kitten, had stopped chasing leaves and had begun to climb the tree. But Kiki was very brave. So he flew into Fluffy's face. Fluffy had not yet learned to balance well, so when Kiki bumped into her face, she topped over backwards and fell right off the branch and landed with such a bump on her little nose! She never tried to climb that tree again. Kiki was very happy, for he knew now that they all loved him. They had happy times in the garden together and soon the little magpie forgot he had no tail. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The Donkey and His Shadow ~ Aesop Fable A Traveller hired a donkey to carry him to a distant place. The day was intensely hot, and the sun was even hotter. The traveller stopped to rest and sought shelter from the heat under the shadow of the donkey. The owner who accompanied him, found no other shelter there, and the donkey shadow gave protection only for one. Both the traveller and the owner of the donkey claimed it, and took to arguing violently as to who of them had the right to the shadow. The owner claimed that he had let out the donkey only, and not his shadow. The traveller asserted that along with hiring the donkey, he had hired his shadow too. The quarrel went on from words to blows, and while the men fought, the donkey galloped off. Moral: In quarrelling about the shadow we often lose the substance. |

He called out to a passing traveler for help, but instead of holding out a helping hand, the man stood by unconcernedly, and scolded the boy for his imprudence. "Oh, sir!" cried the youth, "pray help me now and scold me afterwards." Moral: Counsel without help is useless. |

Hence it is that men are quick to see the faults of others, and yet are often blind to their own failings. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Hercules and Pallas ~ Aesop Fable Hercules, once journeying along a narrow roadway, came across a strange-looking animal that reared its head and threatened him. Nothing daunted, the hero gave him a few lusty blows with his club, and thought to have gone on his way. The monster, however, much to the astonishment of Hercules, was now three times as big as it was before, and of a still more threatening aspect. He thereupon redoubled his blows and laid about him fast and furiously; but the harder and quicker the strokes of the club, the bigger and more frightful grew the monster, and now completely filled up the road. Pallas then appeared upon the scene. "Stop, Hercules," said she. "Cease your blows. The monster's name is Strife. Let it alone, and it will soon become as little as it was at first." Moral: Strife feeds on conflict |
