Breaking point?

I may have found mine....

Ive been so busy for the past three years and it finally catching up with me. By busy I mean 40-80 hour workweeks, moving, being a newlywed, being a new parent, changing careers, and delving into this new career.

I feel myself slipping all the time. Little things mostly; missing obvious things, being unable to speak clearly, not seeing the forest for the trees, etc.

The hardest part is that I was always a cut above in all my endeavors and now Im hitting sub-par in work, my marriage, my family...it feels like Im constantly losing ground no matter which way I turn.

Maybe Im just getting old? Im only going to be 28 in a few weeks, but there was alot of hard living from 13-20 going on...could have something to do with it I guess.

Im going to shoot for a week off hopefully the end of September which very well may help things, but Im a bit skeptical...

What do you guys think? Old age, long-term fatigue, or am I just being a wuss?

Re: Breaking point?

Everyone gets burned out no matter of age, espcially working so many hours. It isn't being a wuss. If you need a small vacation, take it if you can. Or just call in sick for a personal day if you have to. Keep working 80 hours a week and you will burn out quick. It not only will affect your job performace, it will affect other areas of your like, like your marrige and all.

Re: Breaking point?

I used to work the 40-80 hr weeks before too. Was when I had a child in the hospital and needed to. I felt the same way. Burnout and exhausted and it always seemed that no matter what I did I never got all that I wanted to get do it never got done. I was working two jobs and had to quit one of them to get any relief at all.

Yes a vacation will help, just don't be thinking of work while you are away from it. And a week might not be enough...take at least 2 weeks to really get the relief you need.

That is my advice use it or not. But do know you aren't the only one out there in this situation.

Re: Breaking point?

Take a proper vacation, minimum of two weeks, it will take at least a week for you to get used to not working, so just have fun and don't do any work at all.

Re: Breaking point?

I'm gonna agree with everyone. You need a vacation. Minimum of 2 weeks, just like Talon said.

When you've been working those long hours and you suddenly just take a vacation, your body needs to adjust to not working. And then that's when you can really relax.

Re: Breaking point?

Just wait till your almost 29, I’m dying over here! Just kidding

Like everyone else said your way overworked! Newlywed & new daddy sound like a full time job in itself, plus working those killer hours! I can only imagine your fatigue, and I can’t imagine you being able to work those house forever (although the duckets would be a major motivator for myself, but I have no kids or a life )

I too feel myself slipping at work; I’m a work horse & always give 200%+ but lately I feel myself slacking. I’ve lost my focus, and I think I’m just getting burnt out. I think vacation will help you temporally but I think you need to think long term. I can’t imagine you being able to spend much time with your growing family and I’m not sure how likely it is you might make a mistake doing your job because of your fatigue. I would say if your financially stable, maybe cut back some hours and just relax with your family. I’m sure you’ll always be able to find some over time some where, even if you have to float to another hospital. Regardless I wish you luck and we’re all here for moral support!

"Suck it up and drive on." Just kidding. Take Care of yourself so you can take care of your family. Vacations are always good, if you cant do that, steal a day away at the spa.
