![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Upon the (Dread)horns of a dilemma I am not unlettered in the art of Peerless hunting. I have challenged and emerged victorious against both the sultry Lady Melisande and the enigmatic Effusion. Indeed, Blu Sidhe’s skills were honed to GM against exactly these foes. So it was with little fear that I determined to beard the Dreadhorn in its lair. In my past adventures, several hardy companions were required. I decided that I must solicit assistance! Unfortunately, my friends are few and my enemies legion. Who? Who would accompany me? I decided to check Twisted Weald for my acquaintance, Lord Madrid. This fine fellow has often been chatty with me as we pursue our favorite adjacent pastimes of Swoop-baiting and Cu farming. To my pleasure, Madrid was present in the Weald. Our conversation quickly turned to the survivability of two strapping discord tamers against the evil one-horned beast. After reading some hunting manuals, we decided it was possible. The journey to the Dreadhorn’s isle was not without excitement. In my haste to beard Gnaw in his lair, I ran afoul of the local Changeling Gang. Readers familiar with my adventures understand my hatred of these chain-smoking hooligans! Our voyage was slowed by the need to consider our sins at the shrine of Sacrifice. This was not our last rookie mistake. I’m not a true Dreadhorn virgin, having previously helped another group farm keys – but my understanding of technique and specifics was limited. After securing the Thorny Briar, a putrid Gnaw’s Fang and some sickly-looking cotton, we proceeded to perfect our technique against the local Changeling gang leaders. We killed Guile and Spite again and again for the keys they hold. Stop. Now Reread that last sentence. Indeed. After several iterations and a number of deposits with the Royal Britannian bank, I reviewed the entry in An Adventurer’s Field Guide to the Weald. It seems that the named monsters of this region are full of guile, and spitefully horde keys to IRK players. Our time was not completely wasted, because we had felled both monstrous spider queens while mistakenly targeting those psychotic red and green butterflies. It took some careful searching of the swamp to locate Irk, which had hidden itself south of the Dreadhorn’s angel statuette. Once I found it – did I mention that I was atoning for my ill-preparedness by putting myself in harm’s way? – we had to crack its skull a number of times before we found one with any brains to speak of. One final trip to the angel statuette found Madrid and I, along with trusty si(h)dekicks Blu Sidhe and Nanook, in mortal battle with the Dreadhorn! By “mortal battle,” I’m naturally referring to us and our pets, not the King Corrupted Unicorn himself. The Royal Britannian Bank did well that day. Our courage was unflagging. Our strategy, however, was unwise. Suffice it to say that we slunk off the island in defeat after about 45 minutes. We had begun to make some progress against the beast – which, fortunately, heals very slowly. But the Dreadhorn was savaging us mercilessly and eventually our resolve faltered. Blu Side was too bloodied and broken to protest my treatment of him, and I shamefacedly stabled the loyal brute. I am still too embarrassed to evaluate what remains of his skills. Madrid and I parted, resolving to try again some other day – perhaps enslaving Arctic Ogre Lords or summoning an army of Earth Elementals. Madrid has befriended a Greater Dragon, which might also prove useful in our struggle. Certainly more useful than did I… I call out to you, intrepid adventurers: How should two companions approach this challenge? ~M Last edited by Magister_Returns; 3rd March 2008 at 05:53 PM. |

![]() | Re: Upon the (Dread)horns of a dillema A very well apt description of the events which took place. Nanook is none too happy with me at the moment. I need to get my hands on a a few caramel apples to win back his favor methinks. For our first time and not knowing with in the world we we're in for we did pretty darned good. I've spoken to a few other season players who have conquered the DH and they all told me they died alot. And for 50k in HP we did manage do around 10k or so in damage. It was just a little disheartening watching our beloved pets get cut up like a hot knife through butter. Even disco'd at 14% Penalty he was just too much. And us two disco tamers thought we we're so smart. ![]() Later that night I went back and got all the keys and tried to solo the DH with my mage. I guess I have more *coughs* than brains. But I don't take defeat easily. Now I've read numerous times that getting the keys is the hard part I say just the opposite. Getting the keys is a sinch but the Dreadhorn himself is an absolute beast. For two it's a hardy task. If we had another two strong mages to heal our pets there no doubt in my mind we could bring the beast down. I'm ready and willing to bring it to the Dreadhorn again. Madrid |
