![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | A nice take on the Quest for Humility as penned by the Shadow King of the Shadow Court, and respected acquaintance of Tabbitha, Muldran Skully I've learnt a lot in the time I've been here. I've gathered and acquired. I've sought and found. I've given and taken. And yet still I find myself... hollow. But there was something missing. The Virtues. Yes, they are the core of Britannian life - but when was the last time I'd thought of them as more than a 'oh yes, I remember that'. Concerned, I searched inside myself, and while wandering, I found my way to Magincia where a representative of the Council worked. Gareth - for that was his name asked me questions about Humility; about the understanding of the virtue. Of course, I've read many books, I could understand what he was asking... But what about Humility? What does it really *mean* - that's what I need to know. With a smile, Gareth directed me to Vesper - my old home town, and suggested I help out at the Museum for a while. For a few days I assisted the staff there, collecting wood and items to support the institution. I spoke to a few of the people who kept the museum running; noting that they didn't see this as a sacrifice, but as a way to bring the past to the people who lived in the present. After several days labour, the curator thanked me for my time, and allowed me to choose an item from the crafter who creates replicas of the items stored there. I chose the shepherd's crook; the symbol of Humility, and took it back to Gareth. He was pleased with the word I had done, thanking me for endorsing the inspiration and learning the Vesper Museum represented. He then bade me to travel to Moonglow to assist the wardens. When I arrived at the Zoo, I was met by the head warden. He thanked me for assisting with the capture of some tricky beasts some time ago. He offered me a sash, engraved with the words 'For the Life of Britannia'. I suggested that it wasn't necessary, I was trying to follow the path of humility. He simply smiled, and handed me the sash, saying that "We all do our part." Taking the sash I returned to Gareth. He didn't seem at all surprised that I had completed that task quite quickly. He thanked me for the assistance I'd given to the Zoo, and sent me on to Britain Library - to collect a special printing of the book Virtue, by Lord British. Ah, I remember this tome well! I eagerly set off to the Library. I made a brief detour to Vinyamar, and collected a large number of volumes, which I took to donate to the Britain Library. The officials there were delighted - and all but thrust a copy of the book into my hands. I felt odd once more; surely I was just doing the daily grind - collecting, working, getting a reward. Where was the humility in this? Sighing, I returned to Gareth. Gareth took the copy of the book from me and smiled that small smile of his. He asked me what I knew of Humility so far. I did reply that I was confused, was Humility running backwards and forwards, donating, collecting and assisting? He threw back his head and laughed - a genuine laugh, not a nasty one. He handed me a grey cloak, and told me that Humility is more than doing things for the good of others. There's a meaning hidden within the tasks one takes. After all, if everyone was 'doing things to be humble' then we'd all be the same - and where's the Humility in that? He told me that there were several people in the world that one might suggest are paragons of the virtue of humility, and they'd assist a seeker. I asked was the cloak to identify me. He thought for a moment, and told me yes, it was, but humility isn't just a badge to wear... And so, I left the building in Magincia and set forth on another journey that was to take me quite a way around the world... __________________ Muldran Skully Shadow King of the Shadow Court ![]() |
