PaxLair Viceroys to Become Mayors

PORT BALDMOR, PAXLAIR, CHESAPEAKE - January 2, 2007.

Mayor Winfield officially announced tonight at the PaxLair-wide meeting in Port Baldmor that all the City Viceroys would be granted titles of Mayors during the 9th Anniversary of PaxLair, January 14-19, 2007. In his prepared speech, Winfield also said that PaxLair would become a Statehood consisting of the five cities of Dragons Watch, PaxLair City, PaxLane, PaxOku, and Port Baldmor. In addition, Winfield will remove his title as Mayor of PaxLair and become the Governor of PaxLair, the newly formed Statehood. PaxLair will also enter an Age of Enlightenment, involving an in-depth immersion into the Realm.

These announcements do not come as a complete surprise since PaxLair has been in an Age of Cities since August 9, 2006. During that Age, there was a focus on development of cities, governments, establishments, citizenry, and activities.

Mayor Winfield announced that the PaxLair Statehood would be entering an Age of Enlightenment during PaxLair's upcoming 9th Anniversary. He said, "Our stage has thus been built [refering to the Age of Cities]. The cities are organized and prosper. We will turn the pages to an Age that will test each and every one of us through immersion in this Realm well beyond the 'mechanics' of our existence."

Winfield envisioned an upcoming Age where "quests, plots, evil and good schemes, court cases, diplomacy, combat, adventures, calls to arms, and a lot of new comraderie" will exist.

Speech delivered by Mayor Winfield at the PaxLair Meeting in Port Baldmor on January 2, 2007

I have a speech for tonight regarding the two Ages for PaxLair. I will speak quickly, so you hopefully will not start digging out your pillows.

As many know, PaxLair has been in the Age of Cities since August 9th, 2006. We are coming up on our 9th Anniversary during the week of January 14 through 19. The official 9th Anniversary of PaxLair is on January 19th, 2007. During the Anniversary, we will transition to a new Age. The next Age is called the Age of Enlightenment and will last for 6 months.

Back to the Age of Cities though, which will end soon. Over the past 5 months, PaxLair has focused on building 5 cities on this Shard. It has been a wonderful experience and we've formed a pretty cohesive community. We defined city governments, developed housing, held many events, appointed officials, and worked with citizens and guilds in PaxLair and throughout the Shard.

These five cities are.... Dragons Watch, Felucca! PaxLair City, Felucca! PaxLane, Trammel! PaxOku, Tokuno! and Port Baldmor, Trammel!

Each of these cities are unique in their citizenry, guilds, alliances, and culture. Our overall PaxLair community is a bit of a melting pot, just like the original single town of PaxLair long ago. Now we continue this philosophy with 5 cities catering to diverse interests of many people. While each city has its own nature, overall we are held together by our original three Tenets of PaxLair. These are ... Peace, Neutrality, and [Roleplaying]. And the Tenets are tied together by an overarching nature of PaxLair ... Respect.

Our Age of Cities will conclude during the week of January 14th. During that week, I will hold ceremonies to appoint each city leader, right now called a Viceroy, to a new position. Each Viceroy will don the title of Mayor and take a continuing oath of commitment, responsibility, and accountability for each of their cities. This will also recognize tremendous efforts so deserved by our cities and citizens.

With these full-fledged cities and mayors, PaxLair will then become a Statehood. And with that, I must humbly don a new title for myself. I will release my title of Mayor of PaxLair to the history books and humbly take on the title of Governor of PaxLair. We will continue to strive for unity within the PaxLair Statehood as we move into a new and glorious Age in PaxLair ... the Age of Enlightenment!!

Our stage has thus been built. The cities are organized and prosper. We will turn the pages to an Age that will test each and every one of us through our immersion in this Realm well beyond the 'mechanics' of our existence. For in this Age of Enlightenment, we will see all things primarily from our existence in this Realm. There will be quests, plots, evil and good schemes, court cases, diplomacy, combat, adventures, calls to arms, and a lot of new comraderie.

We will likely see more Orcs, Elves, Humans, Vampyres and other races in our cities. We will have complex situations to solve in quests through lore, legends, and action. Caravans and shipping will increase to support inter-city commerce.

Defense forces will take on new challenges. Establishments will become famous for their unique hospitality. PaxLair-wide meetings will be perhaps monthly, relying on the Cities to stimulate the immersion every day and keep their citizens informed.

More realistic relations will form between our cities and with cities and towns outside PaxLair, even on other Shards. Our community will grow naturally with new ideas, spirit, creativity and respect. The Age of Enlightenment will officially last for 6 months, and then some new Age will descend upon us.

In essence, as our Kingdom is Reborn soon, so is our beloved PaxLair and all of us with it.

PaxLair grew from a single town in 1998 to a stable, resilient, and energetic community of several towns and diverse interests. Through the years of change, PaxLair always seems to keep moving forward willing to take on new experiences, involve more people, and take on the next challenge.

Hail everyone, I'm "Winfield" from PaxLair on Chesapeake.

I'm looking forward to participating more on UOForums.

I do not wish to overload everyone with long posts, but I tend to put together my thoughts for a little while, then throw them out to see what happens.

Here's more specifics and some OOC on what we plan for the Age of Enlightenment. I am very interested in getting feedback from people on these ideas, so please fire away. I'm starting by posting here on the Chesapeake Forum to get local reaction (would this be an appropriate topic for the RPing Forum too?).

What do you think of the following ideas? Will it stimulate interest on the Chesapeake shard? We also plan to go cross-shard with some of the RPing and involvement.

Anyone can play the UO game. Few people, though, have taken the game and made something well beyond the Mechanics. We have and are continuing to do so. Now, it's time to go beyond the Mechanics for our characters ... and bring those characters to life in the "stage" we have built!

Player Suggestions to get the MOST out of the Age of Enlightenment:

CHARACTER VS PLAYER:
- Role-playing Immersion - Play the Characters, not the Player.
- Become Famous as the Character - not just the player.
- Keep your Characters separate - one character does not know what the other knows.
- Think and React to everything Realistically from the Character's point of view.
- Don't break character - React as your character would react, not the player.
- Don't turn RPing ON and OFF like a switch. Everything can be done through RPing.
- In-game Presence at its HIGHEST - Reading forums? Log in your Character too & sit at a pub.

PLAYER VS PLAYER:
- Player to Player Drama ... take it to Private Resolution. Don't react right away! Take a break.
- Out of character Boards and Flames DO affect how people view your Character in game.
- Show Respect and Respect will be Returned!

CHARACTER TO CHARACTER INTERACTION:
- Remember your Interactions with others - You'll probably interact with that character again.
- Generate Creative Emotion - Become well known as the Character.
- Be Consistent! - Don't be a friendly character one time, and assassinate the next.
- Character to Character Drama ... have at it! Have fun with it! Don't take it to the player vs player level.
- Do it in the Realm! If it's not there, it's not "real".
- The Window to the Realm is one screen wide - Move around, see what is going on.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT:
- Character Development - Establish your biography. Stay consistent with it. Make it known to others.
- Be Creative! - Challenge yourself to be unique. Stand out from other Characters.
- Don't worry about "thees and thous". RPing is much deeper than that.
- Use the Mechanics to enhance your character - clothing, emotes, "stage props" in your bag.
- Don't worry about dressing differently to go into combat. Everyone must try to survive too.

EVENTS, NEWS, GOVERNMENT:
- Every event can be a Quest - add an RPing Reason ... save the damsel in distress.
- Report the News - Interactions and Activities are lost in time without reported news.
- Role-play the Government - decrees, treaties, decisions - RP the Positions!
- Filling the schedule with events is not important - Quality is.
- Spontaneous events - they can be more memorable and easier to set up.
- Stay informed! - Sky pages, calendars, activities centers, quick review of forums. Daily updates!

FELUCCAN ENVIRONMENT:
- Experience it! Don't be afraid of it! - Sometimes RPing at its best! Teamwork at its best!
- Carry what you can lose - Come as a "newbie" and interact.

COMMUNITY POPULATION:
- It's not about numbers - It's about dedication and commitment! It's about having Fun every moment in UO.

BOTTOM LINE: Play the Game as you desire of course. We hope you will join us in the PaxLair Age of Enlightenment. You could find it one of the best experiences you've had in all your years of playing UO.
