Smithing.. Smelting vs Selling

So I am busting my rump working smithing on my new elfy character and am currently at 111.9 and crafting plate gloves.
I have read a couple different methods. One says smelt what you make and the other says sell what you make.
Are the people who are selling their gloves those that have an unlimited amount of ingots?
Or is it cheaper to sell and buy more?
I am currently smelting but have gone through nearly 60K ingots from GM and I am barely half way there.
Any legendary smiths have any input on this?
I am currently spending all of my UO time working smithy and it's not exactly fun.
Legendary tailoring gains went soooooooo much faster!
I wanna get back to my crafting quests LOL

Re: Smithing.. Smelting vs Selling

I went around and bought up tons of iron ingots when working my smithy skills. I always sold everything I made. I would use Haven because the bank and the blacksmith are next door (pre-Luna) I've GMed at least three smiths (various accounts) and still have over 100K iron ingots at the house. Now days for iron you just have to walk around and pick em up. Everyone seems to be leaving the iron on the ground.

I did the same with carpentry too. Gnarled staffs to GM, selling all the staffs to the Haven smith shop.

The Haven banker buys everything too.

~Edit~
You can also buy iron ingots from Cybenickel. Only $8.99 for 100K ingots. A very fine seller of UO goods.

I've never figured out how to be gracefully humble without appearing weak.

Nor have I figured out how to be gracefully passionate without appearing arrogant.

In the end, I always seem to be arrogant and weak instead of humbly passionate.

I GMed 2 Carpenters and I don't even have a Lumberjack. I used cybernickels lumber and it was worth every penny!

Re: Smithing.. Smelting vs Selling

I smelted all my ingots but somehow at that time my smith/miner was bugged I had 110 mining with my ringmail gloves on and got a good amount of the ingots back that I smelted. I dont remember what % but to me it seemed worth it. Course alot of the ingots I had then were from the AOS personal bless Deeds(xshard trading) and junk bod's when they could be smelted into ingots. I had a ton of ingots
