Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
The most common skill used for this method is Lockpicking, but it can be applied to many skills. The method is this:
Go to the Twisted Weald in Ilshenar. You wil need to first accept the Dreadhorn quest from Lorekeeper Calendor the Keeper of Tradition in Heartwood. He is by the Bowyers, to the right from the entry gate. Once inside, find a Satyr and attack it. The Satyr has the use of all the barding skills and can be a formiddable opponent so be prepared to dance for a fe seconds until he does what we are here for; uses Discordance on you. Discordance will lower any and all skills on your char which will let you train them as you did at lower levels. There are a couple of different methods to this depending on the char you are bringing down there to train. If you have enough Magery to cast Invis, begin casting right after you target the Satyr. This will let you pass the skill check before your Magery drops from the discord effect. If you dont have enough Magery to cast Invis, you will need to drag the Satyr to the sparkle gate you came through. As soon as you get discorded, run through the gate and then back through. Line of sight will be broken and the Satyr will no longer be gunning for you. Unfortunately, this methd has a drawback. Anything that the Satyr has provoked onto you (another barding skill he has access to) they will not be so friendly when you return so you will need to kill them. An extension of the drawback is that the sparkle gate resides right next to the Twisted Weald Champ Spawn so there is usually a multitude of targets for him to provole onto you. Whereas with the Magery method listed above, you can try to stick to the midfield by Swoop and he will have much less to throw at you. Once you are discorded, the Satyr is no longer targeting you, and you have killed off any provoked creatures if needed, all you have to do is stay close to the Satyr and the discord efect will stay indefinitely. So, what skills are trainable and what do you need to do them? Alchemy: Feasible. You will probably need to have at least 2 packies for regs and empty kegs. Anatomy: Feasible. All you will need to do is keep using the skill actively or if you were training Healing as well, Anat would gain passively. Animal Lore: Feasible. Like Anatomy you could actively use the skill (being close to Swoop should yield several peoples pets to target) or working Vet would let Lore gain passively. Animal Taming: Barely feasible. You would need someone constantly bringing you pets to retame AND hope that the Satyrs movements didnt make you have to move away from them. Archery: Hmm, Im saying possible but more trouble than itd be worth. Youd have to bring a Golem and constantly bark commands, disarm your bow, etc. Arms Lore: Im guessing feasible. Just bring some equipment to Lore? Begging: Feasible. Get some hirelings (escorts might work too) and bring them with you. Blacksmithy: Totally infeasible; until they mutate the Fire Beetle into having an extremely hard head that can double as an anvil. Oooooh, or even a one slot pet, like some kind of Armadillo...thats for another thread.Bowcraft/Fletching: Feasible. 5 packies each carrying 1600 board should keep you busy for a bit... Bushido: See Archery. Carpentry: See Bowcraft/Fletching. Cartography: Feasible. Bring ample blank scrolls and mapmaker pens. Chivalry: Feasible at any level that wouldnt require you to cast Holy Light as you would constantly either flag on the Satyr or lose disco from being too far away. Cooking: Is there a portable heat source? If so, yes. If not, no. Detect hidden: Another guess here; yes with tinkered trapped boxes. Discordance: Ironic, yet plausible. You would probably need to bring proper pets for the level you would be at... Evaluating Intelligence: Plausible. See Anatomy and replace "Healing" with "Magery" this would be the one argument or even using this method on Eval, the benefit of bring Magery up at the same time. This is probably still not the best way to go about trainging Mage skills. Fencing: See Archery. Fishing: Uhhh, if you were really brave, you could drag him over to the water by DHs island... While many people may entertain the thought while attempting to train Fishing normally, we wil still cann this one busted. Focus: "Feasible." There will probably never be a need for anyone to ever, ever use this method for gaining Focus but you could if you really felt the need to...it will gain passively with the use of Mana or Stam. Just cast spells and walk on foot. Healing: Very plausible. Simply bring a Hit Point Increase item, preferably with around 10. When you put them on, you will have HP to heal so put a bandage on. Remove item, repeat. Hiding: Very plausible. Just walk around Hiding while following. Great to train in tandem with Stealth. Inscription: Plausible. Just need plenty of blank scrolls and the regs of interest. Probably a 3 packy job; 2.5 for scrolls, .5 for regs. Lockpicking: The grandaddy of the Satyr Trick. Going in you will need an appropriate skill locked box, the key to said box, and as many picks as you can carry. A packy *might* be a good idea for the extra picks. Lumberjacking: Semi-plausible. There are trees that you can chop within the weald but keeping the Satyr near them would be a pain. Mace Fighting: See Archery Magery: Feasible. While you could attempt this if you were trying to raise Eval and/or Resist at the same time, Spell Channelling Mage Weapons are a much better bet. Read on that method in this thread. Thanks to Rhus for those tidbits! ![]() Meditation: Plausible. Again, this is one of those skills I wouldnt go there to train specifically as gains are usually pretty good with normal gameplay, but if you were down there, gains should be better. A big problem is that active meditation has always been better for gains (for me at least) and that require you to stand still. A bit of a problem if your Satyr has had any coffee... Mining: Like Fishing and LJ, I suppose if you were really gung-ho about it you could attempt it. Since these skills have specific places where they mustbe worked (trees, water, mountainsides) it would be a pain. Probably more pain that itd be worth... Musicianship: Plausible. Like a few others, this skill usually does just fine and dandy in gaining without assistance but should benefit from the discordance. Probably only actually useful if you were training another Barding skill... Necromancy: This *would* be a good idea but would take some preparation. You would want to get to the highest level of Karma posible before begining due to the aggressive nature of some of the Wealds inhabitants toward negative Karma chars. Depending on how much skill you could gain beforehaving to fend of mobs of Pixies, this might be a worthwhile endeavor. Ninjitsu: Plausible. I know that I have trained up to almost 85 with no wep skill so no ability to use the combat spells so this would be able to be done using Mirror Image, Shadowjump, etc at the appropriate skill level. not sure how effective that would be vs. training it on a char with the ability to cast the combat spells tho... Parrying: Feasible. While you could probably get this to work with a bit of effort, there are much more effecient and easy ways to gain Parry. You can take a look at just that discussion here. Peacemaking: Feasible. This another skill that really gains pretty darn quick with normal training methods and Satyr training it has the drawback that you will probably anoy the Swoop-ers who will probably kill your Satyr in retalliation... Poisoning: Plausible. Maybe bring a packy full of kegs of poison, a few bottles, and a fishsteak and go to town. Having only trained Poisoning up to 80, Im not sure how much of a benefit this would be to those shooting for GM, but it *should* work. Provocation: Im going to say not plausible. If you had a Tamer friend that could bring down non-aggro pets to release so that you could hopefully not travel too far away from to target, its a possibility. They would also need to continually supply you as they die off... Remove Trap: Plausible. 5 packys full of trapped pouches = 635 gain attempts. Since this skill is only really used on Siege, you would probably be better off training with dungeon chests as youd be making money the whole time. Resisting Spells: Feasible. Probably best done in tandem with Eval and you would just wear an LRC suit and continually cast Weaken on yourself. Spell Weaving: Plausible. Cast whatever is appropriate to gain at your discorded level. Spirit Speak: Plausible. Since you would probably be training Necro at the same time, see that entry above. Actively using Spirit Speak doesnt make you lose Karma, so you could just train that through this method witout fear of having your Karma get low enough to get swarmed... [b]Stealing:]/b] Plausible. You would need to bring a container and items that would weigh your discorded Stealing skill/10. Then place the container on the ground with the items in it and Target steal the items out of it. Just keep moving the box as you go along. Stealth: Very plausible. Best when trained at the same time as Hiding. I personally went for the slower gains while I stealthed around Fel looking or IDOCs... ![]() Swordsmanship: See Archery. Tactics: Not very feasible. Youd need monsters of the appropriate skill level to fight. A Tamer friend may be able to supply these depending on your discorded Tacs level. Tailoring: Very feasible. Packies with sewing kits and plenty of cloth/leather. I plan to try this when I start working Tailoring again someday. Oil Cloths should take you to darn near 120 with this method... Tinkering: Very feasible. Plenty of ingots is all; you can make more Tink Kits as you go. Lockpicks will take you to about 93 displayed skill, so that should get you to GM through this method. If you are on Cats, I will buy your lockpicks. ![]() Tracking: I will confess that I have no idea how youd go about training this skill. A PM or a reply here would be great! ![]() Vetrinary: Feasible. A friend with a dead pet would follow you around and refuse to allow everytime you succesfully rez it; if your discorded Lore and Vet are both over 90...if not, bring your own pet and cast Bless on it, apply bandie, wait for bless to wear off, repeat. If you have no eval, the bless should wear off pretty quick... Wrestling: See Archery. Feel free to drop corrective posts/thoughts below or PM me with the info! Enjoy! |

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
A little tip from me:
Hold the Alt key and click on the Satyr (the actual satyr, wont work if you click his health bar) that is discording you. You should follow it and not have to worry about getting too far away from him. |

Way to go Zeke!! Thanks for running with that!!!
*cautions* Break discordance if the satyr takes you anywhere NEAR a changeling, ESPECIALLY if you have packies with you. For some reason, the Satyr will sometimes continually spam area peace as it wanders around the weald. This is really annoying to swoop farmers who solve the problem with a quick "all kill". Macro Advice: In the ingame macroes, for active use skills (lore and anat), you can set up on one button the following for spamming the skill to find a target automagically: Use skill Wait for cursor target NEXT Target.

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
Not so sure it works for Eval/Resist Spells. Atleast, I didn't gain in either one when casting Weaken on myself for a few minutes.
Skepticle about Wrestling too 'cause I gained once on it, but that could have just been luck.

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
You noticed it too DiP? I was wondering myself if they messed with satyr training.
I was kicking myself for not training Poisoning during the blackrock event. It went off right when I was about to train it up, so I tried using the satyr trick. I was gaining at the same rate (if not slower) using the satyr. |

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
Yeah, something is telling me they changed it for all the skills.
I plan on doing poisoning again *sigh* and will test it to see if they changed it.

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
Hmmm, while its possible that they changed it, I find it tough to chew on. Wouldnt it be the same code that allows you to use -xx skill Mage Weps to train Magery? Or skill gain being level dependent all together?
Poisoning was a pain even with the Motherlode... |

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
I don't know.
I wouldn't think it's the same code though 'cause a -xx Mage Wep only effect Magery, is based off of a base number, and effects are in effect when an item is equipped. While discord effects all skills and is based on discorders skill, distance from discorder, and a timer.

Re: Skill gain through Satyr Discordance
Tried it using cu and attacking swoops after cu was disco'ed unfortunately the one skill i was trying to raise, healing, did not drop when disco'ed..ahh back to rotting corpses! Also tried it with peacing same gains as not being disco'ed. And in reference to cooking heating stand works as a portable "oven".
