Hey all Im new to UO.

Eventually I want to play some type of treasure hunter as my main character, but for now I feel that something more combat oriented is better for learning the world.

In all other games Ive played Ive always been either Rangers or a Druid, and in wow a hunter or a druid, so I suppose I will stick to that pattern.


Are there any templates out there for Ranger builds?

Im assuming one wants archery/taming and what else to start with on an advanced build? (none of the pre made classes interest me at all).


What about starting str/dex/int distribution? Is dex the main stat for someone with archery as their main skill?

Yes dex will be the most important stat for any type of dexxer character, but you can build that up easily, I would start out with str about 30, so you can wear armor thats out there. The normal str requirement for wearing armor is like 20.

In UO, a ranger is also known as a tamer though, so your idea of ranger may be different than UO's ranger. An archer/tamer is really kind of redundant, since you have 2 forms of attack, so you will want to focus a tamers skills generally in these 6 skills. Magery, eval, med, tame, lore, vet. There are hybrid tamers out there who do peacing, but I also am of the type that sees that as kinda pointless too. I would rather let my animals fight a fighting creature instead of a dazed peaced monster. But its all up to you.

The best way to get started in the game is to make a paladin, as you will learn firsthand combat, then you can move to the more difficult templates and hybrid templates.

It is a rare breed to combine both Archery, Stealth, and Taming in the same template effectively. But a true ranger indeed.

What BO said about archer/tamer is true but it works for me because I am a lousy fighter so being able to attack with up to five pets and a bow give me a better chance of staying alive. The best thing is to have a go on the test shard and see what suits you best

Ah! So that is why my title changed to ranger when I got taming! For the longest time it said bard and that is what I was aiming for, I dropped archey and such and then that title appeared. I was confused... but now I know!

I started my ranger and am out turning things into pin cushions! :grin:


But now Ive got a backpack full of stuff no one wants to buy. Is there really that much junk in the game??

Stuff like the body parts and musical instruments off of zombies, footwear from fishing etc.

Who do I sell this stuff to or is it all just junk?

There is ALOT of junk in this game. Most people only want REALLY rare stuff or arties.

As far as the title, say you have all your skills at 110, arrow up the one you want to show as your title, then lock the rest, close paperdoll, open back up and then there you go, you get your title. Like if you are 120 tame and lore but want to be tamer instead of ranger, you lock lore arrow up taming and its tamer! easy as that!

Footwear will be bought by cobblers only. There are several near tailor shops around the realm, but there are none in Haven.

I should know...I got stuck with a LOT of boots and shoes back when they were random items on corpses.

I was in Vesper one time to BUY boots! No ophidians in sight and soon as I come out of that cobber store... there they were! They killed me, so wandered around for awhile to find a rez. I am back to life people werr fighting the Ophidians and I got my body back everything was there! Even my loot box but the ONE thing I came for... my boots! They were gone! EVIL Ophidians they stole my boots! >_<

I come home and find I have a fishtank prize... it was not a water condition change, nor was it a new life form... no. It was boots...

I was not sure what to think of that at first. I could have said "Yay I got my boots after all!"
... no I was VERY leary of them! For the fact me getting boots got me killed! But I put them on anyway haha!

And guess what?

Everytime I wear ANY footwear in game I get killed in the WORST possible way and can never return to my corpse, it rots, and I loose everything! I was only lucky the first time!

It is the curse of the boots! O_O

So I am probably one of the only UO players that doesn't wear shoes and I hope no one EVER offers me them because there is NO WAY that they are going to be in my inventory! Even if I get them as loot and keep them for whatever reason! There I am dieing some unexpected horrible way and can not get back to corpse in time! It is so weird...

So I fear boots, if there is no boots in my daily UO playing I am perfectly fine ^_^

i'm barefoot on my chars too...the only char that isnt barefoot is the one wearing the Ember Leggings.
