Just started playing again, need advice

Hey guys,

Just reactivated my account. I've got some solid players on the Sonoma shard, but I am totally lost as to the new game play and skills and higher caps and special moves and so on and so on.

Anyway, it would be cool if you guys could give me some advice as to how to scuplt (or re-sculpt) my characters. I know they used to be really good, but now I have my doubts. From Best to Worst (all chars capped at 710):

Oracle (Mage) - 91 Str, 35 Dex, 100 Int
GM Magery, Meditation, Wrestling, Incription, Eval Int, 90.8 Resist, 79.2 hiding, rest is random

Longshot (Archer/Mage) - 78 Str, 46 Dex, 106 Int (these seem very bad..)
GM Magery, Meditation, Archery, Tactics, Anatomy, 89.6 Healing, 75 Resist
- I feel like the new "focus" skill shoudl replace meditation on him, is that correct?

Beraxen (Fighter) - 99 Str, 80 Dex, 47 Int
GM Mace, Swordsmanship, Tactics, 95.1 Parry, 97.9 Anatomy, 88.2 Healing, 46.8 Resist, 40 Magery (for recall mostly)

Blaken Bearsbane (Craftsmen) - 75 Str, 54 Dex, 96 Int
GM Alchemy, Carpentry, Fishing, Tinkering, 91 Mining, 73.2 Tailoring, 82.1 Magery

So, what do you think? I am sure that all of their Str/Dex/Int statistics are very far off from ideal as I have no idea what they should be. Should I try to change some of my GMs, and which skills should I try to raise past GM? Which char is the best to pursue as my main char?

Thanks for any/all help! :eusa_dance:

Also, I am still playing on the UO: Renaissance expansion. Are the new expansions worth me being if all I'm really interest is PvP? Will I be at a huge disadvantage?

Re: Just started playing again, need advice

First you have to decide whether character will be a PvP or a PvM character so you can tailor character more.

For Oracle he is good. You want to get magery and E/I as high as possible since that will determine spell failure and spell damage. Not sure what to do w/ hiding on a mage. You can drop that and get anotther skill such as
poisoning or mage resis.

For longshot you have to decide if he is a warrior or a mage. I would drop med and get E/I and look for mana regen from armor or if more of a mage can keep med and get E/I and drop anat and healing since you can heal w/ magery. Keep in mind that you are going to need a spell channeling bow so you can cast spells and shoot arrows at the same time.

For braxen I would soul stone a wep skill to free up points and get rid of magery for Chivary since you can use sacred journey to travel and and you get all the other skills that come w/ it.

Blaken is a mule so he is fine haivng all GM skills.

General rules:
If you use healing you need high dex to heal faster. This is usally taken from INT since you healing is more of a warrior skill.

For mages you need to have high int and health and low dex.

Focus is not necessary anymore w/ the advent of regen stats on armor. IT is really a waste of points.

Remember w/ a mage you need mage armor or leather armor to take advantage of meditation.

If you give general ideas as to what you want each character is for then more people can give advice for you templates. Guys on forums have a wealth of knowledge to share and they ar emore than happy to help. Oh yes welcome to forums!!! Good luck and most of all have fun!!!!

Re: Just started playing again, need advice

Wow, thanks a lot for that great response. I will try to address all the issues.

First off, I know nothing about new weapons/armor. I didn't know "spell channelling" existed or that you could know cast with a weapon in hand. That seems awesome. I definitely need to study up on what kind of things armor/weapons can do now. I hear about lower regency cost and armor that makes regs useless. That seems awesome.

As for the characters:

Oracle is my PvP. I was working on hiding because it used to help me in faction wars back in the day, but I think poisoning is probably the way to go.

Longshot is my PvM guy. I used to love having the archer/healer/mage hybrid, but I can see how I should pick between healing or magery and stick with the course. Probably leaning towards magery/archery.

Beraxen is just my dumb warrior. I used to like being able to use a bunch of weapons and never took him seriously. Chivalry sounds awesome... that didn't use to exist. I used to keep 40 magery on all my chars just so I could cast recall... Thank god they created a new way of getting around.

As for Str/Dex/Int.. what would you suggest are ideal amounts for the chars? Also, how do I raise hit points on Oracle? Is it directly related to Str?

Man, I totally feel like a newbie again! :newbie:

Re: Just started playing again, need advice

For mages I would say 100 str 115 Int and 10 dex.

For warriors 100 str 110 dex and 15 Int

This wil change if you have a +25 power scroll for stats and mods coming from armor. The stats max for any one stat is 150.

The only problem you will encounter w/ a warrior w/ too little Int is the number of special moves that can be done in a given amount of time.

STR= hit point
DEX = stamina
INT = Mana

You can run a nox mage if you wish but remember / magery + poisoning has to = 200 to get bump up in poison (combined skills).

I went throught he same thing when I came back after 7 years so I am more than happy to help anyone who has comeback to the game!!!
