You gain some karma.

So the other day I was helping snuggle out with an Excel query, but didn't have any spreadsheets to test on my machine (was testing open office's ability to open/save excel sheets)

So, I did a search on google for XLS files and came across a website which had open access to private/confidential documents for customers! ack!

I opened up an excel sheet which was called samplep.xls from the listing and erm, was rather surprised to find a list of passwords for credit checking agencies in there (Experian, Carfax etc)

So I emailed the company who's name was on the top of the sheet with the information/link and got this back today

Thank you very much for your information, we truly appreciate it. We are not sure how this happened and have already contacted our technical support to look into this a.s.a.p.

I wish I could have been there when they read the e-mail to hear the screams...

How did Open Office work out for .xls? I have the download on my puter and have yet to install it...

I use open office at my work and we haven't had any problems with it. However, it doesn't have all the functionality that Excel has.

Re: You gain some karma.

We had a citizen call and report that a dumpster was open and lots of papers were blowing out in the street behind one of our administration buildings. Luckily it was just someone retiring, and instead of shredding documents, just threw all our info into the dumpster. Just useless stuff like social security numbers, employee id numbers, addresses etc...

And for some reason the admins didn't understand our concern about information security. They actually got mad at us for questioning them about it. But it wasn't me that went to the newspaper about it! (it was robert, at the unions request!)

I just like how they want to blame us for being mad but not blame one of their own for being inept.

So Adam I wonder what kind of fallout there was after Helena got in touch with whoever she did at that company.
