Warning: Potential Item Loss

source taken from uo.com's FYI

Posted to uo.com's FYI Nov 29 2006

There is an issue with certain items appearing to lock down. *However*, these items will decay quickly, even if locked down. Please do *not* attempt to lock down any older legacy items, "newbie" items, or any other items that have historically been quick-decay items that would not lock down. In Game Support will not be able to replace any items that have decayed while locked down. If you have any uncertainty about a particular item, store it in your bank box or in a secure container until further notice. If you find an item that can be locked down in your home that should not be, please pick the item up *immediately*. The items listed under December 1997 on the following URL are some, but not all of the items affected

We thank you for your time and attention on this issue.

We are actively working to fix this bug as we speak - we posted as soon as we identified it, and have Leurocian hammering on it right now.

I'm terribly sorry for any losses - we actually discovered it when our QA testers logged on to their play accounts and saw they were missing their Christmas champagne and glasses.

I don't think this was answered in that post, maybe I just missed it. If the items have been locked down for a long time, will they stay locked down?

OK, it looks like this is the deal.

- Pre-2000, you could lock down newbied items. Around 2000, that was changed to prevent locking down the newbied items.

- Sometime recently, the no-lockdown fix was broken. This allowed people to lockdown newbied items. Also recently (and maybe part of the same bug, I'm fuzzy on that) newbied items started to decay when locked down.

So if you have a locked-down newbied item, assume it is NOT safe and stick it in a secure.

Re: Warning: Potential Item Loss

*Update*

these are items that you cant lock down? But now you can but they decay?

#########################

exactly... newbied items didnt use to be able to be locked down, and theyve always decayed in seconds when placed on the ground

in fact someone on the rares forum brought this up at least a week ago and I warned them then to not do so with them because of their already unstable nature

if this is indeed part of an attempt to get them displayable tho.. even if its not working quite right.. im happy about it

##########################

I hope thats the case as well, I've been dying to lock down several newbied items for years.

It is NOT an attempt at getting them displayable, it is a bug. We will most likely be fixing it by returning newbied items to no-lockdown status. (Mostly so we can fix it NOW and not break anything new)

The no-replacement policy is, to the best of my understanding, an issue of proof - our logs are such that we can't see what happened after the fact. If we gave everyone items that they claimed to have lost without any way to verify... well, you can imagine the madness, I'm sure.

Re: Warning: Potential Item Loss

I have 12 chars on two accounts.
None of my chars has "item id" as a skill. So now I guess I am faced with "if you value the item, remove it and place it into a "secure" container?
Good thing I bought a second house to store my rares in...seems I will need to move them from one house, into "secure" storage in the second house, just to be safe.
My main house is full....no room in secures, no storage left for more "secures" and bank boxes? rofl....they are almost always full.....of *valuables*, if not true *rare* items.
What a mess, sure hope it's fixed soon.

Sneky, just try and insure it. If you can't insure it, and it doesn't say "Blessed", then it's newbified.

we fixed the bug, which was that you could lock down items that had the quick-decay script on them. The quick-decay script itself is a design decision - we looked at changing it, but it was way more complicated than it initially looked, so we opted to stick with the current design for the moment.

At the risk of asking the obvious, does this mean I can lock down my braziers and things again safely?
