Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up

The following was just posted over on the official UO.com website front page:

Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up
These are exciting days for MMORPG fans here at EA. With the acquisition of Mythic, the UO team will be working with the creative folks who brought us Dark Age of Camelot and are hard at work on the spectacular-looking Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. I’m thrilled that the UO team and Mythic will work together to forge Britannia’s future.

There is much to talk about with our new partners, and it will take some time to review and finalize our plans. Because we need to take that time, we are postponing the announcement that we were going to make this week. The in-game fiction cycle will take a break for a bit and will return soon.

See you in Britannia,
Darkscribe

Re: Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up

I don't feel very good, about all this...

This is exactly how I would expect a "revamping of UO's graphics" to begin, which would mean the 2D client's days would be numbered, either as the original 2D graphics or 2D at all.

Hopefully, this is not the case.....

Not exactly sure where this is going to lead, DAoC wasn't very impressive at all.

Re: Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up

I don't even want to think about how much money I had tied up in Warhammer 40k miniatures. Warhammer is great as a tabletop hobbyist game because it's the models and miniatures that serve as the prime attraction..certainly not the rules or the shallow world of the game.

DAoC was pretty good. It is a matter of opinion. It is a lot better than UOs 3D. I hope this means some darn good 3D...and not the death of 2D.

Re: Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up

I think a fully 3D UO could work... but it must retain the same camera angle the current UO has and it has to run much smoother than our current UO3D.

I mean, if the gameplay remained the same as UO2D, would it be so bad if the graphics were improved to (good) 3D graphics?

Always makes me happy when people understand that 3D doesn't automatically mean first person. There's hope for humanity yet

Re: Ultima Online and Mythic Teaming Up

Well if they decide to do 3D I hope they still make models for 2D because that is one thing I just LOVE about UO! It is one of the LAST games that is in 2D that is still in today's world that is an MMORPG! I really like how the 2D graphics look and the art... 3D is okay but gosh... so many games are like that now! I understand I really do.. but BLEH! >_<

CatHat, should that excuse cover why paying customers of UO get very little in the way of ongoing new content as opposed to other online games?

You'd think with EA resources we'd see more bang for our buck than the more 'independent' game companies with less resources. As it stands, UO does a terrible job at providing new and fresh content in its online world.

I doubt the little mmog game companies you refer to have the same legacy of game stuff to sift through and the same challenges and tasks we face. UO is nearly 9 years old now with toolsets and client that are even older. Its fun on a bun lemme tell ya. If all EA wanted to do was milk it you wouldn't be hearing news of PB and other smaller steps like that - In fact we wouldn't be here having this coversation - but we are - and its probably one of the most comprehensive teams since UO’s creation.

With the new Dev team in the seat of power for just the past 6 months we've been cranking away to develop a bigger, better team and to do a lot for UO that nobodies seen yet - and before any of Darkscribe's news goes out we're told to hold back, be quiet and wait while tedious big company business stuff is taken care of first.

Sure, if we were independents and not a big company we wouldn't have to wait to tell you stuff - but that's how it is guys.
