I have been Playing UO and reading stratics for years but haven't created a stratics account until now. I was extremely happy when they said they were coming out with a new client but then I was flabergasted when they said it would be for lower end systems. What??????? Any half decent computers of the past few years can play wow and everquest. Hell, you can get somthing nice for like $350 even less if you use your current monitor. with this kind of mentallity one wonders what kind of crowd UO is after. You can not take one step forward and two steps back and think you are making progress. This game has such wonderfull potential and it's sad that you let a small percentage of people on really old computers dictate what this game will become.

UO isn't WoW, nor do we want it to be. One of UO's features is that you can play it pretty much on any computer around, and we're going to do our best to keep the sys. requirements low so that all of our players can enjoy the new client.

Just because they are shooting for low minimum required specs doesn't mean that they aren't trying to put out a client that impresses top of the line systems.

That's the beauty of current graphics technology... is that it is scalable. You can turn down "teh pretty" for performance, or if you have the system able to handle it, crank it up and be amazed at the quality.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the images we've seen are from a high end system with the details options shoved as far Full Detail as they can go.

Lower end systems I doubt will look that good to be honest.


Are you serious? 2007 and that's what you got too tell me. You guys are really insane. You sir and the people like you are the reason only 60k play in Europe and North America.


Two words: Scalable Engine.

Turn stuff off and it'll run on any old system. Turn all the fancy stuff on and it'll bring a conroe EE with quad SLI to it's knees. It's all in the implementation.

UO has one thing going for it that no other large mmo has, it runs on old computers. And by old I mean 500Mhz P3 and below. Vast numbers of people still use P2 and P3 systems, because there's really no need to upgrade, they run anything most people want to do fine.
Second hand laptops around the same specs, but with even less memory and worse graphic cards are extremely popular at the moment too. What games can they play?
That's right, UO.
UO needs to keep that part of the market as well as expaning into other parts.

Thank goodness my boyfriend plays UO and understands 'system ' stuff

I wish people would wait until they can actually test something before they gripe about it.

And yes, I'm griping about those people before I can test them, I just can't test torturing them endlessly though... or can I?

Did they say when in 2007? That year, I think, has about 12 months in it I am ready to test it out.

No date set for 2007. But DS did say most answers should be answered by the end of the year. Make your assumptions...

Mine, they will either answer questions through the 5 on Friday or have a test set up so all can see first hand.

I'm one of those people with a rather old hunk of junk 'puter and I seriously do hope it can run the new client. Because I'm liking what I'm seeing.

Having options to turn various eye candy effects on or off sounds like the way to go.

hmmm... take out crafting and durability and that will free up alot of lag.

Oh my gosh yes, I am very happy that it is and I bet it will be the longest running game out there compaired to all them other games. (Or least I would hope it to be)

Aye, people just gripe about everything... I mean at first I was like "AHHH!" haha but I am better now.. content is what is imporant not graphics (though I really do like the little 2D graphics) Ah, well nothing you can do to stop them. I am ready for the new client though I am screenshoting like CRAZY right now to make sure I have it ^_^ or least the places I want to remember in 2D hehe

Good idea.

Making sure that a game that you put out now can run on computers taht are 5 years old is a very intelligent idea. It doesnt need to look killer on an older rig, just be playable and look half-way decent.

Why? The people who are palying on these older systems probably arent really aware how much better a game can look with a higher end rig, but they still enjoy the way things look currently and dont want it toyed with to a point that makes it worse than what they know.
