SpeederXP Controversy

Player: Since the townhall meeting in Chicago.......
.....Mr. Tact said that someone useing Speeder XP was illegal and a BANNABLE offense, is it possiable to send to the cheater what tehy done wrong IE,.

Currently the message is, You have recieved a 72 hour ban for illegal 3rd party applications.

Since they are detectable, they shoudl read,

You have recieved a 72 hour ban for useing Speeder XP, since we have detected this, your account is flagged adn will be randomly checked to see if you continue to break our game rules, be warned, if cought useing this program again will result in a perminant ban.

It is possiably to detect these programs and tells the offender this si what you did we WILL check again remove it, dont use it again or we will not allow you to play in our game.

This will get rid of the cheating scum, and also allow players to see it does not help anyone that chooses to cheat, we will not put up with it, AND we do not want your money!

Wilki: Ok, I suppose it's time to settle this once and for all.

We have a rule about no 3rd party apps, and it's a blanket rule. However, it is also enforced selectively based on what the application in question does. The rule is there to give us something to point to if we have to action you for doing something bad. I realize that some people want everything spelled out, every potential possibility written in stone, but that is not realistic when there are so many variables to take into consideration.

A decision was made long ago that the programs currently on this site aren't actionable, because they aren't harmful. And the whole "does it interfere with the datastream?" question is a red herring, as I can think of some programs we don't want you using that don't do that at all, but clearly do things that you shouldn't be doing (like looping macros in UOA for instance).

Does that open a can of worms? No, not unless your goal is to play semantics with what I've said and say "Well, what about this program?" to attempt to justify doing something that you shouldn't be doing. I refuse to play that game, so if that's your goal, don't bother.

Use some common sense, and you'll be fine. You know when you're doing something bad, and using "UO Tamer" isn't it. Using a program that lets you loop actions, remove/modify object in the client, or script actions clearly is. Using a program that changes the speed at which UO runs is also clearly not okay.

So, just to be clear, anything currently in the Stratics Download section is OKAY to use.

Consider this the final word on the subject.
Player: Then windows XP is an illegal 3rd party program. SpeederXP does nothing that is not already built into XP.
Wilki: Well, doing a quick test, I discovered that with SpeederXP running at the fastest setting, for some reason I couldn't double-click myself or my horse in-game. i.e. I couldn't mount or dismount. i.e. it was doing something strange to the client's intended behavior.

Setting client.exe to "Realtime" didn't have that affect.

Saying "Then Windows XP is an illegal 3rd party program" is exactly what I was refering to when I talked about playing semantics with what I said.

How about if we just play UO as it is intended to be played? i.e. without the use of some 3rd party application that causes weird behavior in the client.

What's so hard to comprehend about that?
Player: Well setting priorities in UO could flag the person as a cheat when they did not run it. I eman you do not have to get mean or start sbapping at me I am just pointing out that you can do what speederxp does within windows. I mean you want to get into semantics UOA is not exactly how UO was meant to be played either.

I am just worried I have Quake 4 installed and nvidia can set priorities using an app to make my cideo card overclock. I also set priorities in XP to make it run faster. So that I could be banned because I overclocked my system and tweaked my performance?

I am not attacking you here I dont know why you got to talk down to me like you are doing. This is a legit worry for those of us who play games other than UO. I am worried now I could get banned for using anything that might speed up my pc and somehow flag to you I am useing speederxp when I just went into system manager and tweaked my PC.

I guess my only safe solution is to play UO on my other PC and not use it on this one.

Wilki: You mistook exasperation for condescension.

Saying that Windows XP is illegal is dead on what I meant by "not playing that game". Obviously, you said that knowing it wasn't true. Just like saying you're not going to be playing UO on the same computer you play Quake on, because you might get banned for it.

Honestly, just play UO without using applications like this and stop worrying. You're not going to get banned for setting your priority to something other than normal.
