Questions on Personal Attendants ... CatHat Answers

On Stratics UOHall the following question was raised about Personal Attendants ...

What purpose do these serve in game? I can see this for new players to help them. and i can see how they may be "cute" for a short period of time but i dont see what purpose they really serve."

During the discussion a poster responded with the following to which CatHat summarizes the benefits of having Personal attendants.

"Great, wonderful, amazing. Please show me where players (japanese or european or american) were demanding something like personal attendents in the game???? Their are MANY OTHER THINGS that japanese players have been demanding like more support in their language etc. which I am fairly certain they would appreciate more than useless personal attendents that require cash to get. But you are arguing for the sake of arguing and more power to you.
And if, their target market is Japanese audience should they not be doing the testing on Japanese shards instead of mine? Jeez."

Yes - the Japan EA offices requested them on behalf of the Japanese audience who are a large part of our global player base. There was a whole document on this - and no i'm not going to go dragging about for it just for you.. Would the Japanese have liked bigger features and things, sure, hell who wouldn't want a bigger piece of the pie - human nature - but large feature addition/change were not part of this paticular job. It was a small fun thing they requested.

Since a lot of their gameplay and player tastes can differ from a lot of our western audience we do try to make a few things just for them every year. We test locally first because - gee -thats where the folk working on it are. Thats why its on 'your' test shard.

You don't have to like this stuff - i mean everyone has different tastes - don't like it? Then don't buy it - vote that way as part of the western audience. Just don't think we go and build it for no reason, while eclipsing all of UO's other things. Ok. That just not accurate to think so.

That having been said..

Actually - There are benefits to stuff like this being built. The tool sets they developed to create these kinds of NPCs and this kind of stuff, can be heavily modified and utilized later in quests and other things. And i don't just mean some guy shooting dice or being a barker in a quest - but actually being able to use parts of newer code to generate cooler events, actions and interaction in the future.

I love it! My seniments exactly. Depending on what they cost I may or may not buy them. But they are kind of fun. I've been messing with them on Test. Any additions like these to the game are good as far as I'm concerned!

Woe is he who works on something not on the whiner's list of grievances.

On another note, I like it when people assume they know what's going on behind EA's doors.

It's also interesting how whenever they DO address any of the things high on the whining list, the solution never satisfies the whiners. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. Leaving the thing alone makes people moan, doing something about it makes 'em moan all the same.
