Memorials - Being Fair to All Players

Wilki: As for a PM about "something big in the works", I'm not sure where that came from, but it is not the case. I looked at a PM I sent a few weeks ago on the subject, and I said this:

______________________

Yes, I have received some requests about this house, and I'm trying to see if there is something that we can do for you. Unfortunately, sometime ago, a policy was put into place that basically prevents us from doing things like this, with the reasoning being that if we do it for one person, we have to do it for all.

That said, I'm still trying to work the system to see if we can do something, as I know Goodman was a well known and respected member of the Atlantic community.

______________________

I did inquire about this, as I did for Folger on Siege as well. I fully intended to reply to that PM, but apparently I did not, and for that I apologize.

For quite some time now, it has been our policy not to memorialize individual players in-game. The reason being that if we do it for one player, then we'd be obligated to do it for all. It would be hard to justify to an individual or a small group of people why their loss isn't as important as the loss of a larger group of people, and then to deny their request while fulfilling another. So, if we did this, the result would be lots of memorials in the game, and also a lot of attempts to abuse the system. Thus, for a few years now, we've left the decision up to our players on how to best memorialize those who have left us.

We most certainly understand your request, and do sympathize for both the loss of the family as well as all of his friends on Atlantic.

Good stance from the developers standpoint. I suggest players approach their EM when they want to do something like this. I've seen a few articles locked down by EM's on various shards which memorialized the passing of players. Nothing as big as a house, but a necklace by the waterfall, etc.

Re: Memorials - Being Fair to All Players

I guess I will post the other part since you mentioned that:

Wilki: The dev team has absolutely nothing to do with this. They, and I, are not allowed to alter the in-game environment without special permission, and in fact, most of us do not even have that ability in the first place (except on test shards).

There are many rules and policies that we have to follow, so no, we cannot "do what we want."

Player: I don't think the EM's should create memorials for people who died in real life, for EXACTLY the reasons Wilki said it couldn't be done.

Wilki: That is correct. The EM's have to follow the same policies as everyone else.

Personally, I think it would be a worse idea for an EM to even bring the suggestion up to someone. They get harassed enough about playing favorites and I personally wouldn't want them to be the ones making these decisions.

That's a good point... the EM's do get enough grief for playing favorites.. even when they aren't.
