Iv played UO since the beginning on and off have a 7x GM Mage Char and working on a 7X GM warrior char, i can't seem to make decent gold at all, I currently have no artifacts, and about 100K to my name, I spend alot of time killing rune beatles and such and the gold drop isn't that great, especially with items selling for millions upon millions of gold i have yet to ever see 1 million in my 9 years of playing, my char can't really handle good loot monsters due to poor equipment and to upgrade it would cost me millions upon millions to make my character viable, so is there anywhere that is good for item drops/gold drops for a GM Mage or Warrior that doesn't have any artifacts or uber armor?

You have a good location but you kill too slowly. Make a bard/mage or bard/tamer. The more you kill in a given amount of time the better the haul. I have a Bard/Mage that is only about 4 months old and I have 7 mill on him now by just hunting for fun. If I really wanted to make money with him, I would probably have 3 times that.

Personally i think they should make mages and warriors on par with a tamer, they are far too powerful and offset the other classes in comparison, tamers make massive amount of money where the other classes are gimped, some of us don't want to play a tamer not our style, so why not make us on par damage wise to them and survivability a class should be used as an alternative not as a means to be able to kill better and better stuff. They should all have the same damage potential and survivability just used in a different way.

[i] Actually, I don't use my tamer for farming. My bard/mage does that. He can provo a pile of creatures onto each other then send in a couple of evs to finish them all off. 5-10k in one battle Of course this all depends upon spawn density but you get my meaning. A bard is a very good investment if you need the funds. Tamers are powerful because they take so long to make. My legendary took forever. I only use him for taming and events now that I have a bard. Whatever route you choose, I hope you rake in the cash [i]

The fastest I can make gold with my warrior or mage is on the third level of the Fan Dancer Dojo where the Succubus and the Daemon Spawn. Succubi have around 1200 gold plus decent loot and the Daemon has about 600 gold. I can farm well over 100K an hour; sometime 200K; but that's with my warrior. I don't know how a mage does against a Succubus.

Another good place for warriors is Destard farming Dragons, Drakes, and Wyverns. Don't forget to take the jewels off the Dragons.

If you have a miner/smith and a house with reasonable storage levels available, do the following:

1. Find a creature that you can kill fast that drops metal items (magical or no), and if possible gems... There are several options here to fit your taste.

2. Camp this creature with a bag of sending. BOS the gold when you get near overloaded and keep picking up every metal object the creatures drop.

3. Set aside several secure bags for metal "trash" and when your house is at or near capacity, resmelt all those junk metal items into iron ingots.

4. Find a relatively popular NPC smith by checking their ingot prices (anything 14 gold or better is good) and sell off your iron ingots at the highest price you can.

5. Sell off the any and all gems to the NPC jewelers... if you're in a relatively popular hunting area such as ant infiltrators, be sure to double check corpses from other players for left behind metal and gems.

That should help your gold intake quite a bit between the gems and metal (they'll outpace the actual dropped gold by a LOT).

Okay....here goes.

Farming critters is the LEAST effective way to earn gold. However, since that is your question...let's examine it with your template...a mage.

First, since the goal is to make gold, try farming critters which give you something which you can actually sell to make gold. (One really good item is worth weeks of farming).

The way I started making gold on Origins with a 70ish mage with zero gold and nothing to wear was to farm Solens while doing the SOLEN QUESTS. I farmed and farmed, selling the BAGS OF SENDING and translocation powder. I made several hundred thousand gold doing this over the course of several weeks. A spider slayer spellbook does wonders in this effort.

I would next try Onis. They give around 1600 gold per drop and frequently drop some high end items. I think that a demon slayer spellbook works on them...but can't remember.

Swoop of course. But still has lots of traffic, I believe. I prefer places where I'm undisturbed in my hunting for the most part.

Dragons are good too. Don't forget to skin them and take the gems. You can sell the gems and the leather (use those "free" bags of sending you farmed to send them to the bank.)

Bottom line on farming critters is that you have to actually do it. Someone who has been playing as long as you have who doesn't even have 100K (a sum you can get in a SINGLE DAY hunting Onis or even Ice Demons) hasn't really been trying too hard. That is 60 to 70 Onis and around 150 to 200 Ice Demons...certainly doeable by a GM mage once the tactics are worked out.

Other methods which don't involve critter farming:

1. Camping IDOC's.
2. Buying low/selling high from NPC's.
3. Buying selling bandages in Doom (dang skulls are expensive now though).

But, just DO the critter farming....the gold will come.

Very true. Also arrows sell for quite a bit. I know that killing changelings will net you more gold in arrow sales than in gold aquired.

Yeah - its pretty easy to make a brisk business in arrows - a good way to make extra money whether you're picking them up off of archer monster foes (like ratmen archers) or just cranking them out yourself with wood and feathers cut from creatures.

Too lazy to make arrows? well feathers merely cut from a feathered corpse I've sold for about 3/4 of the arrows value a lot of the time - so thats another quick route for hunting and money.

If you're willing to take things back from hunts to sell - there's a lot of ways to make gold other than what the beastie has in its pockets.

Please do not come up with an emergency patch for UO Welfare System. Put them lazy individuals to work killing monsters, there are plenty of monsters across Sosaria.

I was like this guy for a while. Id be willing to bet that the biggest problem is spending money...

Once you just start using what you have and spending as little as possible on nonsense, you get to a point where you have a mil in the bank and can rest easy not worrying about money.

hoho When I first started to play, 6+ years ago, I used to run around the WBB and pick up peoples junk and sell it. I used to think that loot would fall out of the bank windows... now I think I just had a really bad connection I'd then sell it all and revel in my 500gp I made selling bags and feathers!

Unless of course your on Siege were NPC's do not purchase items.

For a percentage of wealth gained, we are willing to put those in need to work. Just pick up a shield and stand between us and our foes, you'll be compensated when the killing is over.

Note: Friendly fire only applies to friends, not shields.

Give us your huddled masses of UO poor, and we will give them hope for a brighter future as shield bearers.

That is just the kind of thing I needed to read. If anyone has any other tips on making gold please post it.


I have found recently that since I switched to LRC armor, I die more often and thus pay the insurance costs. Not sure I am really saving that much by getting rid of the reggies. Nice not having to worry about keeping stocked up, but GM armor is not as bad as I thought it was.

John, it is very possible, with the right pieces, to build up a 100% lrc suit and have nice mods. I can think off the top of my head, a suit that would give you great resistances, kasa of the rajin, rune beetle carapiece, pendant of the magi, stitchers mittens, ember leggings, arms with high poison and some lrc, boomstick, and some jewelry with some lrc and possibly fire resist, and some fc/fcr, and there is your all 60s and above lrc suit.

As far as the OP is concerned, how has this guy survived this long with only 100k in his bank? Even when I first started, I was able to make 100k a day, and that was fighting basic boring stuff. I think this guy needs to explore more than the orc forts, and first level of despise.....

I am not as handicapped as he is, but the prices are really high in the vendors. I have only been on Europa for about 6 or 8 months so I don't have a great amount of gold. I blew a big amount of gold reserve to buy the boomstick and it will take awhile of farming to build up that reserve again.

I have been farming dragons and daemons at the temple on fire isle. I am only going to get armor pieces that are so good from there but I can handle this spawn reasonably well most of the time. One of the things that slows me down on making gold is that I keep the gems and the leather. Just can't make myself part with them.

Easy money for a 7x mage and still workable after not playing for quite awhile. Go to shame first lvl, throw blades or ev's at earth eles. i made 10k in about 35 mins "getting back on the bike". I looted nothing but gold and gems, about 7500 in gp and 2500 in gems. Wasn't touched 1 time by eles or scorps. With an lrc suit u stay still full, BOS your gold or recall to bank and back. rinse and repeat. Easy money with no risks. The best part never saw another toon in dungeon. All the more for me. If your warrior has healing you can gm him there as well.
