Jeremy/EA, question about account security (?)

source taken from UO U.Hall

Jeremy/EA,

Please explain to me why I can not have the account security like this person has on their account.

Why can I not use this feature to protect my account when it is clearly available?
Why does this account get special security?
Where is my my secret question on forgot account password?

========================================

Whoa, way to link a massive GIF (both in dimensions and filesize) in your initial post. =( Imageshack will be blocking that soon for excessive bandwidth consumption. =P Please exercise good netiquette!

Oh and for the record, I tried one of my accounts and it had the exact same security question prompt. The account name is NeoDyno if you really want to try it yourself. And yes, it is MY account and I'm choosing to post that information here. I've never set any 'security questions' on that account in my life; I despise the whole concept of them although, thankfully, in this case they're not the sole method of enabling a password reset. The one on my account doesn't even do anything; I can fill it out with completely random characters and still get the email confirmation although if I leave it blank it does show " The information you provided was invalid." I also get several questions, such as "What city were you born in?" and "What is your favourite EA title?"; none of which EA would even know.

The only thing different about this account is that it was created using one of my existing AIM names which EA reserve for you, rather than created purely from scratch. I have no idea if this plays a part, though. They could be just testing something, or beginning to implement the feature which isn't yet complete. No idea.

Regardless, it's not about people being more "important" than others. Man, be paranoid much? I'm sure they'd roll it out for all users once they have implemented the system correctly. As I said, the one on my other account (which I did not request anywhere, or even fill out security questions for) doesn't even seem to do anything at this stage.

==================================

750k? People post screenshots of that size/dimensions all the time, it's just cos it's moving it seems a bit extreme.. but they kept the file size impressively low, considering.

I'm well aware of who owns that account, and that's why I want to know why the rest of the public doesn't have this feature. He's a well known "celeb", and he has the feature... That's my concern actually... Why does a well known poster here on stratics have extra features... If anyone wants to know who owns it, just PM me.

===================================

Then would you care to "enlighten" the Reptile1701 (due to ROC...Via PM) ?

On this xFallenTear and you, and I, are in agreement ...

IF it exists
We'd like it for our accounts ...

no "biggy"
no "confounding puzzle"
NOT something that can be discussed via nameing names HERE in the forums

huh?

===================================
It would appear that its not preferential treatment towards only certain players, as I just went and checked all of my accounts due to a stray thought that popped into my head after reading another reply about how some of the newer accounts are showing this. Most of my older accounts do not have the security question feature implemented as of yet, although my newest account did, as can be seen in the screenshot just taken a few minutes ago below. Only thing I can think of would be that it is still being implemented into the system on older accounts, and should appear soon on older accounts.

===================================

Just checked the account I started in February 2007 and the youngest of our older accounts which was started in 2004, and neither offers this. How new does a new account have to be exactly?

===================================

Not sure exactly how old they need to be since I don't work for EA yet, but the account in the screenshot above is only a month old, just started it up in late March to hold a house.

===================================

Not to sidetrack the OP's original question, but I am curious as to how a UO "player" (you opened a new account just to "hold" a house, might you also be a UO "real estate agent" who sells UO real estate online?), can also "work" for EA and remain to the rest of us unimportant and unconnected UO rabble umm, let me think, what's the word? Impartial? Honest? Fair? Unselfish? You would really, really, really have to love everyone on UO (much like Jesus loved that prostitute enough to save her from the stone throwers you would have to love murderers who kill you repeatedly in Fel) to be able to pull that off.

Wilki pointed out in a previous post that online game companies hire GMs from within the playerbase as a common practice. In a game like WoW, no biggie because with so many players it is highly unlikely you as a GM would ever be asked to action the account of someone you disliked ingame (1/7,999,999th of chance), but UO is a smaller and much more personal game than Wow with maybe a 1/50,000th chance of this happening. Not good really.

In the end it doesn't matter much I suppose what EA decides to do with UO. They own it. If they want to play favorites and let some players have the security question on their accounts, they can. The only thing we as nonEmployees can really do is decide how much money to give to EA and how fast we give it to them. But noone can tell us we have to be friendly with, buy from or otherwise deal with these 'teacher's pets" ingame.

So Desperado the question(s) is are you going to continue to play UO and open new accounts just to hold houses after you begin working for EA and if so how difficult is it going to be for you to remain honest and impartial to the rest of us UO players who donot have the same connections to the powers that be at EA?

===================================

MOST enlightening Desperado

Occam's razor indicates that Your's is the most likely explanation
Congrats !

I mean, if it is just most recently started accounts ...
I could theoretically start an account ... and duplicate the same animated gif

and say it was a "gift from Sunsword/ Mr. Probst" ....
(aka: Lie my tukas off)

and NONE could be the wiser....

Without the actual "account status" available ... like start DATE....
no-one could "prove" it otherwise ...

I mean.... there it would be, "otherly enabled" so it MUST be a "gift" as I claim

NICE piece of rotting troll food ....
An amusement for baffeling the lesser witted...

and in violation of the TOS

Like here:
You may not impersonate another person (including celebrities), indicate that you are an EA.COM employee or a representative of EA.COM, or attempt to mislead users by indicating that you represent EA.com Inc. or any of EA.com's partners or affiliates.

or here:
Upload any software or Content that you do not own or have permission to freely distribute ...

Methinks the pertinent links should be forwarded to Spada .. for a "reveiw", of course ...
I mean... we're ALL fairly familiar with the clause in the TOS/EULA about:
You are solely responsible for all activity on your Account....

Nes Pas?

Thanks again for a clear thought

===================================

I just checked all of my accounts and NONE have that.

I even created new ones with 8th age and 9th age new account codes and NONE of them have that.

I honestly don't believe you Desperado, especially if the person who gets preferential treatment is a friend of yours

===================================

I can't believe that people think that this is some get preferential treatment on account security. Anyway, it seems everyone can finally calm down because the security question input now shows up when you create a brand new UO account.

===================================

Who says? I just tried to make a new account with my ML new account code, and I am not getting the question? I'm not calm, I want this on MY accounts.

Actually Im highly annoyed about this.....

===================================

It is right on this page.

It is really sad that here they are trying to improve account security and all people can talk about is a conspiracy that some people have this and others don't.

===================================

Why didn't we hear about improved account security until this was made public?

And why didn't the owner of said account go public earlier to push EA to do it for anyone, THAT would have been an act for the community.

===================================

It has been stated a couple times recently that they are actively working to improve account security. Since this feature is obviously not fully implemented, there is nothing to announce.
The person who's account I think that is stop playing nearly 4 years ago. Someone else has access to the account and decided to cause a lot of trouble here on U Hall because that is what they love to do.

This is definitely something we've been working on, but I'm not sure what the current status is - I haven't been told that it's public, which is why y'all haven't seen an official announcement. I'm going to go see if I can figure out what's going on...

===================================

This account is years old... why has this not been placed on our accounts earlier! Especially with the mass password requests happening for years... why was this feature never added during these times of crisis...

Thank you for your response. I would hope you can expand on it though and address the majority of questions found in this thread

The account may be years old, but the feature definitely is not - we have been developing and testing it over the last month or two. This is not something that's been given out selectively or has been withheld at all (except obviously quite recently, and that's what I'm trying to figure out.)

===================================

Your investigations into this are appreciated. It looks like a great feature and I look forward to seeing it initiated. Your time to post and your time to investigate are also appreciated and I for one look forward to any further news that can be provided regarding this possible extra layer of security.

Also, and this is off topic, there is a thread about uo names and trademark infringement that might due with some comment as well...thx..

Wow that stirred up the cobwebs ....tabbitha
