I am curious as to what your feelings would be if the next race introduced into Ultima Online was Dwarves as opposed to a race like Orcs or Gargoyles? The reason I ask this is because last time EA introduced a new race they gave us Elves and alot of people were very upset about it and still are to this day.

Why do I think Dwarves might be next? Because of this screen shot taken from UO:KR in which the developers released a while back. Anyhow, take careful note of it :

Also this website seems to suggest that there indeed will be a new race with the UO:KR (Ultima Online : Kingdom Reborn) expansion :

Anyhow, I think given that we have Ishlanaer you would have at least thought maybe we could have gargoyles as a playable race.

Hmm I personally would have no interest in playing a dwarf. Is that even meant to be a dwarf in that screenie? He has very skinny arms!

I'd be very sad and disappointed with the dev team after all their statements of "putting more Ultima back in UO".

Elves were bad enough, I'd like to leave it at that - do something nice to UO in between, like gargoyles or orcs, maybe then slap UO in the face again with, for example, dwarves.

Virtually no new player is going to pick a Gargoyle or a even know what a Juka or Meer is. They can't compete with Dwarves

No indeed, we wouldn't want any new player to be under the impression they'd stumbled upon anything more than a generic fantasy RPG. God forbid.



What exactly is a Meer? What special skills would you give to a Gargoyle?
How would either if these *coughs* Races, be easier to play than any other, including Humans, Elves and, perish the thought, Dwarves?
Other than a Personal preference. which most people here have been most forthcoming in presenting, where is there a single Game-play aspect that would give one the nod over another?
I;m sorry folks, but in my short 5.5 years of playing UO, I have never seen anyone seriously and persistently RP a Meer, A Juka or a Gargoyle.

If there is a case to be made from an RP point of view, then ok, Orcs have a claim here, given over the years it can be said that a small percentage of players RP's Orcs....but in the end, in a game of pixels dependent on the interpretation of some Graphic Artist and the assumptions, no matter how well researched, of a group of Game Developers....why on earth would any of you think that UO would be better served by ahead of ?

This entire argument is trite and meaningless. Other than some perceived notion on what your Paperdoll and/or Avatar may look like, and that you, as individuals, might prefer them to be...a new race. no matter what it is called. has no effect whatsoever on actual Gameplay. It is the skills, bonuses, negative & positive effects in terms of a playable character that matter...not what it looks like.

Ok, everyone has a right to speak their mind and state, from a personal point of view, how they'd like to see the game develop. Some may or may not have very sound and logical arguments to support their case over another...all good, all healthy debate, but please, don't try to justify your preference for a Meer ahead of a Gargoyle and in front of an Orc and way ahead of, heaven forbid, a Dwarf on the basis of any difference one will make over another in how this game is played.

The added bonus of Gargoyles, in addition to being such an integral part of the main Ultima games (i.e. IV - VII), is they have such a rich backstory, that nothing cheesy would have to be conjured up to explain them. We already have a huge scenario right now that has a lot to do with Ultima VI which is centered around Gargoyles as it is.

Not only that, but the justification for dwarves, that they were in the first couple of Ultimas - well hell, spaceships, laser swords, landspeeders, San Antonio, the Soviet Union, those were all in the first couple of Ultimas as well. If we are going to add dwarves, give everybody laser swords while we are at it, and let's add the Soviet Union landmass as well.

I hope CatHat and the Dev's put in quests and spawns requiring Dwarf tossing.

Honestly, dwarves or any other race wouldn't bother me. I would think since elves would seem to be "good", then a race on the "evil" side would seem to be appropriate, kinda keeping a balance and adding a lot for the RP side.

IMHO, of course.

I'm all for dwarves, and yes I believe that Gargoyles are a large part of Ultima history, but Dwarves are such a large part of fantasy roleplaying that really the world is missing without them, IMHO. Hopefully they will include more playable races in the future, but for now, I'm going to be happy with dwarves.
