Do online player equate in game actons with RL actions ?
source taken from here
Having played a lot of UO and listening in on teamspeak I notice that sometimes players become very upset over things that happen in game , like dieing , or missing out on loot, etc. I can't see how players who die in game or miss out on some loot can become so distraught. It seems often online gamers equate their online items and actions with RL ones , or from my experience. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I think it's a combination of time spent and ego bruised. For example, rather than come to bed and have sex with his wife, SirFarmsAlot decides to spend his night on UO, with his guild at a harrower spawn or something. A few hours later, there almost done... they get raided and SirFarmsAlot dies and loses all his crap/scrolls/whatever. SirFarmsAlot is probably coing to cuss in TeamSpeak, scaring his guildmates and waking his wife. Lost time where he could've been doing something else, and had his pvp-ego shattered by the 12 year old duped-arty-squad. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ive seen a few people with addictive personalities go practically insane when bad things happen to them in UO and other MMORPG's. Ive seen others brush it off as a game, and they play the same amount of hours. Its all on the person and if they can seperate themselves from their created fantasy. I used to get mad as hell when Id die in first final. I learned to live with it and kill first! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CatHat UO Character/Environments Artist Quote:

Yeah - i have a cow whenever i die - Usually due to my own carelessness. Much the same way i might react when i break a pencil lead and ruin a sketch. or spill a coke on my desk. DOH! Arrgh! ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Funny I never took the game that serious. I play to win and if dying is required to reach that end then I'd gladly die. Being a winner in my context was in terms of factions. I dont see how anyone can get a rise out of killing some of the dumbest npc's in the mmorpg universe. I use to laugh at people that would refuse to comit to fights or hide in the back because they where scared to death they'd die in front of people and I guess be teased. I could use this against people every time (both friend and foe) and it never stopped being a good tactic or amusing. I lost count of the times Id just push into a crowd of oj's knowing there wasnt a chance I'd live 30 seconds only to have the maneuver distrupt the current status quo and result in a team victory.. Sure I'd be sputtering the OoO's but if we won its worth it. People simply equate any loss as a personal failure. These are the same people that will stroke out at age 40 and smoke their way to death by 50. Getting killed in a fantasy game shouldnt muster more then a "darn" out of a person. Just my 1 cent.

Re: Do online player equate in game actons with RL actions ?
haha I got a friend who looks forward to dieing in a new and exciting way but of course rather NOT die but hopes it is unique hehe. Course then again he plays WoW were deaths are not as bad as UO's.
I am currently playing both games right now and last night in WoW we was in a pretty challenging spot and whenever he dies so far in something bad he rezs at the spirit healer at the graveyard that you appear at. Lol I just go running for my body like I do in UO. He saw me doing it so he followed me and asking why go back to a scary place and maybe die again? I said, "It is a UO thing you wouldn't understand." ^_^ Actually it is easy to understand but sounded good at the time. I got him using UO termonogly in WoW haha! It is funny when he talks to people in group because he is using the phrases from another game and they are like "Wha-?" He just listens to me way to much before he even started playing WoW because I always used the UO terms no matter what game I was in so once he started playing... he did too even though not once has ever played UO. So it is kind of funny... Oops off subject a little there, very much like me. Anyway when I die in any game =P I am not very mad just kind of like "sigh" and that is about it UNLESS it is game lag or something that isn't game mechanics. Sometimes game machanics can get a little "grr" sometimes but not nearly as bad. I just die simply get my body and be done with it. For items now, I am not into that gear stuff as much as alot of people. They will be showing off thier incrediable gear and I will be nodding and going, "Well glad you got it and you like it." I mean I need stuff too but that is not what I look for in a game. I play to have fun and just get a little bit of things here and there. Slowly but surely and then I know people who are just constantly grinding for items to hope get what they want and burn themselves out. Or least for me it would... they eventally get sick of the game and leave. Come back shortly though =P -RMS Carpathia-

lol
My guild title is Queen of Suicide since I usually run headlong into areas I have business being in. If I die, so what? I'm more concerned with the juvenile punks who feel the need to lie, cheat, scam, and dupe. How do they act irl?

Re: Do online player equate in game actons with RL actions ?
Alot of it, for me, was how I died.
If I had been cheating death and doing well for a little while, a death was to be expected and did not elicit alot of response from me except pehaps an "Ill be right back." On the other hand, if I died from my own mistake or in an area where I should be getting along just fine, I usually got a bit upset, Not "throw the mouse across the room" upset but usually "time to log off till tomorrow" upset... |

Re: Do online player equate in game actons with RL actions ?
Back in the day, when dying actually meant the possiblity of losing something valueable, yea, I got a little mad. More so annoyed, I guess. However, now with insurance, dying is no big deal. The only thing annoying is having to pay to re-insure items, but that's a mild penalty compared to what would have happened without insurance.
I remember when house keys weren't blessed, and anything was lootable. Dying back in those days, was AWFUL. Now, it's a cake walk. |

If something upsetting happens while you are playing soccer, it happens during a game that you are playing IN REAL LIFE . Same for any other game including UO. People who lose their temper over losing a baseball match fair and square are not being good sportsmen. Same for any game including UO. People who lose their temper because they discover that their opponent had cheated are quite justified to do so. Same for any game including UO. The problem with people who complain about others who bring IRL examples to the game is that they forget that the game is played IRL by real people behind real computers running real programs. Just like tennis is played on a real court with a real ball, a real racket and real human opponent. No difference. In short, all "in game" actions are RL actions. There is nothing "equate" because it is already equal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CatHat UO Character/Environments Artist Quote:

Nobody said you had to be good at one or the other while performing both at the same time.

Re: Do online player equate in game actons with RL actions ?
I used to get extremely angry when I would die ... but, not anymore. I think mining bored the anger out of me. Of course, the first time I got vehemently angry was when I was mining near Minoc before the Trammel/Felucca split and some guy started attacking me. I had a pick axe and was running around in my skivvies...it was also about my fourth week playing the game. What pissed me off was that here I was with nothing on me, and some lame PK had to come and kill me.
But, eventually that crazy anger just went away and I took it as part of the game. I actually miss it...the adrenalin rush that comes from the way the rules were back in the day...to include house looting and killing gray's in town. That was like the wild wild west. I still get a little annoyed if I do something ignorant now; like forget to dbl click on my instrument and trying to use peace...then I am running aroud trying to hide or cast invis...other than that...I don't get out of control. The other day I died and lost some good items, but, I didn't exert any energy over it by kicking pillows, hammering my fists on the keyboard, opening the window and yelling as loud as I can or grasping the monitor and shaking it violently in the air...no, not anymore. Take up mining, within three months you will have bored the anger out of you. |
