CatHat Talks about Plants

Posted at UO Stratics:

Player: Please! The man reason I stopped growing plants was because the coloring on them was so bad. It's like the whole plant, leaves stems and all, were dipped in a vat of dye.
CatHat: Yeah – that’s certainly something we want to stop from happening. There's a lot of talk about plants and environmental stuff that will probably make you gardening/environment fans really happy. We’re addressing many existing issues with plant sets and what not – though its slow work when woven in with a lot of other stuff we’re on. Anything radically new will probably have to wait its line in the production queue.

Player plants and customizable environments is a huge deal in UO. I know a large part of the game play is dedicated towards it housing and customized environments. Its something UO has that’s either non-existent or pretty lackluster in most other MMOGs. So obviously, we want to aid that part of the community it as much as we can - but everything happens in stages.

I can also see you're all starved for more customizable environmental stuff too. I had no idea when i painted those leaf roofs in ML that so many people would use them for such multi-task purposes - heh. So when you ask for more gardening stuff - hedge's new plants - hedge animals and what not - we're all ears. 'Pixel crack' some jaded folks call it - I know - but wasn't any goodie out there in world pretty much that at some time when it was new.

I've also taken down notes on the botany Skill set idea you guys linked to - and added it to the file folder of new ideas and my push pin "wall-of-ideas" for new additions players are really interested in. Stuff I like to brainstorm with other Devs or bring up when appropriate in meetings. Seems to me any new skills and systems that allow players to customize their game experience is a good thing.

Yeah - you're right the squeaky wheel does get the grease - only if there's a long line in the auto place - you still have to wait your turn - heh. Still - Glad to hear from you all. I believe as a Dev, that every aspect of the community should be listened to and served as best we can. Its just that some things are going to definitely take much more time figure out how to do – others probably will be seen much sooner.

Either way – know we hear ya –
Player: But, how would that effect the flowerless plants like elephant ears, water plants etc. They could also benefit from a two color system in some cases.
CatHat: Well - some plants could still shift their whole hue color. Thats no worry. But having a 2 color HUE shift isn't likely to happen because of game engine limitations.

First lets try to get the 1 color parital hueing system working properly on plants, and go from there - lol

Re: CatHat Talks about Plants

Yay! I was so addicted to gardening when the plants were first introduced. But, as time went by and nothing new was introduced, I gave it up. Now I grow specific plants only because I don't like most of the colored ones. I prefer most plains and a select handful of others. I think if they re-hue it will bring people back into plant growing. And I think there will be great demand from decorators again

I love the plant part of UO, my only wish for it is that we have something to put seed's in, like a seed packet or box so as not to take up storage space(like a bod book)

A little less taaallkkk and a lot more action!

On a side note, I am very happy to see it at least being acknowledged. I've wanted this for a good long time.

Now... if plants could serve more purpose than just deco! For example.. give us something better to smoke than Nightshade! Imagine the boost to the economy not to mention two brand new professions! The Dealer and the Smuggler! Tinkers could thrive off the sales of hydroponics kits! Go go CatHat!! ;)

Seriously.. I don't use plants in my house right now cause in their current state its like selecting decorative flowers from the crafting isle of Walmart.

I was never a real fan of gardening. But I love to see them ingame. Espcially to decorate with. But growing them?!?! bleh! Would be soooo cool to have a few new plants with better looks!
Thanks CatHat

Re: CatHat Talks about Plants

I am a die hard and still plant between 12 and 20 plants a month. There are some really UGLY plants and plant colors right now along with some nice ones. Plain ones are actually my favorites, because, as was mentioned above, the don't look like they were dumped in a dye vat. As to selling my extras, if I sell 5 a month, I consider it a good month. My goal has been to grow one of each type and color and bring to 'seed stage' then store for x breeding should some nice new things be introduced that are compatible. OR if I decide to redecor and don't happen to have the ones I like already grown, I can 'whip up' a few.

Re: CatHat Talks about Plants

Maybe some new plants, please? Rather fond of orchids (maybe I'll have better luck in game than in rl with them!), honeysuckle if suck passes the language filter, tulips, irises, peonies, any variety of berries, chestnut tree, unusual fruit trees like pomegranate or fig. and to entice CatHat... how about catnip???

I think that would be a little too abused Som.
People would fill houses with nightshade plants and have all the free poison potions they want.
