Any truth to this? Anyone know?

Ok here is the deal. A few days ago someone I know was playing on GL and we were fighting and having a good old time when suddenly this person got pulled into jail by a GM and was told that they had been accused by someone else of speedhacking.

The GM told this person to hold on a minute that they were going to be scanning his system to see if he had any speedhacking programs. A few minutes later he was told to have a nice day and sorry for the inconvienance and was put back in the game. So I guess he didnt.

Anyway my question is, do they really have the ability to scan our systems to see what progs are running in the background? .

#########################

yes they can

#########################

Wow, if that is true, it will be the first time they ever admitted they could see what is on our computers.

#########################

I've heard the same thing before. From a programmatic standpoint it's not hard to scan running processes. There's a well defined API for it.

#########################

[i] Boy even the government cannot scan your computer without a warrent hehe.

Better not look at anything else on my computer hehe. Other then that I do not care. They will find nothing. [i]

#########################

So the question is, what happens when a bad GM decides to mess around on peoples computers? I don't think there are any crimes against this yet are there? I have alot of financial info that I sure as heck don't want anyone to see.

They can't see your stuff the way you are thinking... They can't delete anything in your computer. They can'tDO anything, just scan and look for result of the scan.

#########################

oh noes! big bad EA is against me and wants all my details! never mind the 10000s of spyware programs that are probably running on my computer as we speak! EA is EVIL........!!!

read the ToS ffs lol, "related to the service (UO)" means they can only scan for things errr...related to the service? me thinks some people (not saying you, just in general) have more to hide than "financial info" (related to UO).

besides if your so worried about someone seeing your info why keep it on a computer? there are far more things you should be worried about than some GM at EA doing somthing that he cant actually do (unless ofcourse he hacked into your comp but then it would have nothing to do with EA or UO, he would just be another hacker). an dont give me some BS about "oh I have spyware protection, and im behind a firewall and antivirus blah..blah..etc.." because those do nothing, the hackers are allways one step ahead, why else would the programs be updated all the time? because some poor sap has gotten hacled/infected by one of the hackers or spyware/virus programs and has reported it. what makes you think you wont be that poor sap?

ok im done ranting now sry lol

This is a very serious issue and I believe a Dev needs to step in and tell us EXACTLY what they can and cannot do. This could be a big problem.

No need to drag the devs into this... you agreed to it.. so you should of already know what they can and cannot do before you agreed/signed.

Goodness. I feel sad that I'm breaking up a perfectly entertaining argument.

First things first - the way Jeremy and I roll is that we can't investigate without actual information. "My friend's friend's mom's boyfriend's lizard" doesn't cut it. So, please, threads like this simply must have as much identifying information as possible - names, characters, dates, times, shards, GM names, etc. If you're not comfortable posting that kind of information, you can certainly send a PM to Jeremy.

Now about this - according to "Spada" aka Marco the Man over in CS when he saw the thread, "This is not what a GM would do, nor do GMs "scan" your computer for content. If you'd like for us to investigate, then please have your friend send in a GM Review "

If a GM were to pull someone over and jerk them around, it would be unacceptable and action would be taken. Part of my team's job is to advocate for players who have not been treated correctly. Please follow the procedure Spada mentions, and have your friend send Jeremy the incident report number so we can follow up.

Re: Any truth to this? Anyone know?

LOL same here

I love it more when people reply with "yes they can", as if they know without a doubt, that it's true
.....ahem, bit embarrassing eh?
