about the importance of information
taken from Thread :- about the importance of information found in UO.UHall
Comment Information is important itself. The importance of information is not defined by its usefulness, but by its correctness. There are so many informations about UO, right or false, important or trivial, interesting or boring, useful or useless. We could get the correct in-game information only from developers. The information from developers are important or valuable, not because they are useful, but because we could expect that they are correct. The value of information from devs are based not on their usefulness, but on their correctness. The case of luck property shows it clearly. Even the information on the official web site is often wrong. So we long for the correct information. There came Leurocian out and brought us the correct information. We value the correctness of his information. It is the same with the case of color percentage of Cudshes. An UOSS moderator insists that devs could pass this information to a player because it is not useful but only interesting. But it is interesting because it is the correct information from a dev, that's why it is valuable and the people long for it. Thus the information is valuable based on its correctness. The information from devs are valuable because we could always consider it correct( except for from MrTact. ... of course kidding ). So I could conclude that devs should not their in-game infomation of any kind, useful or useless, personally to a player. I'd like to know the official view of EA on this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **** why is it so hard for you to grasp that anyone can "request" information via given communications (5 on friday, PMs etc) from the dev team. (it is up the the dev team member if they have time and inclination and it is available to the public that the requested information be shared) Why would you want this information kept from the general public? You seem so terribly upset over something so trivial as the chance of a fire cu sidhe being 1 in 23,300. Let it go already. Choose another fight. Why would you not want anyone to know the weights of the various chances of the various colors of cu sidhe? Do you have a valid argument? Do you think someone is sitting there 24/7/365 with a counter now clicking away each cu sidhe that spawns waiting to tame until 23,299? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Oh, ****, I don't intend to offend you, please listen to me. You could request devs whatever you want as you like it, but it is thorough the official channel, I think. If you request devs for infos via PM, other people couldn't see what you get. If you forget to post it officially, they never see it. If you post your request on board, everyone could see what you get. So, I ask you to post your request on Board, not via PM. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quote:

So, I ask you to post your request on Board, not via PM. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am not going to sit here and go back and forth with you. You can PM ME if you like. I will try to make it plain English. Perhaps not your first language. Anyone. Any player. Can send private message or ask 5 on friday question and hope for reply from any dev (who accepts the private messages of course) If the dev has time, and if the request is appropriate, he/she will answer you. It does not have to be in a public forum. It has been this way since the MYUO boards. Back when we were working out bard chances. It is not the big deal you are making it. No top secret information is being shared. People could loose jobs. I can't even think of anything that I could ask a dev member that would give me an advantage over anyone else. But if there is something like that... it isn't being given out. That sort of thing would get a reply of "I am sorry we cannot give that information out". Why not try it and see for yourself. Why make a mountain out of a mole hill? It isn't the big deal you make it out to be. People have been PMing dev team members for years. I promise. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Unless I'm mistaken, I think the OP is worried about the risk of information being shared with individual players that may or may not then be shared with the general public player base. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Draconi_EA VIP UO Designer By the way: If you do need to contact a dev, several of us accept PMs, and you can also contact Jeremy in Community if you need to pass along a message. For instance, my contact information is in my profile, and if you send me a message, English or Japanese, I'll do my best to get back to you. If it's a gameplay question that isn't properly documented and should be, I'll try to make an effort to coordinate with the proper people to get that done. If you just wanna say "Hi," that's even easier ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quote:
Such as the cu sidhe information. Yes? That is what he is talking about here. That information I did not need to share with anyone. I did so on my own accord. I said "Leurocian I am going to post this on the tamer forum with your permission." He said "please do." It was not ordered of me. It was not sent to me to so be posted. I do not work for Stratics. This was a question I had, that I asked, that anyone could have asked, that I don't know that anyone ever didn't ask before, other than the debate that goes on in general about the chances of this spawning compared to that. People have been asking these kinds of questions for YEARS from the dev team via PM. "Hey Mr Tact what's the calculation for chance to hit with GM" or whatnot. It goes all the way back to asking Vex what the chance to provoke two creatures at 90 provoke were when Vex wanted us to use mana.... (for those of you who know who Vex was...) Small tidbits of curious information. I still fail to see what the big deal is. It's not game changing information. It's ohh really? WOW that's harsh! Informatin. I thought some tamers cared so I posted. I didn't think anyone else really cared or I woulda posted it here. Hell I didn't even post it in my own forums. ITS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. I am starting to be sorry I posted though. Really. I am going to bed now. I'm tired and I have to work in a few hours. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I demand that every piece of knowledge that anyone has about any aspect of UO be immediately beamed into my brain and sorted automatically for me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Draconi_EA VIP UO Designer Your query has been provided in both binary and hexadecimal formats for direct assimilation: --- 01010100 01101000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01101101 01100101 01110011 01110011 01100001 01100111 01100101 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101110 01110100 01100001 01101001 01101110 01110011 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01110010 01111001 00100000 01110000 01101001 01100101 01100011 01100101 00100000 01101111 01100110 00100000 01101011 01101110 01101111 01110111 01101100 01100101 01100100 01100111 01100101 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100001 01110100 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01110010 01111001 01101111 01101110 01100101 00100000 01101000 01100001 01110011 00100000 01100001 01100010 01101111 01110101 01110100 00100000 01100101 01110110 01100101 01110010 01111001 00100000 01100001 01110011 01110000 01100101 01100011 01110100 00100000 01101111 01100110 00100000 01010101 01001111 00111010 00100000 01101100 01101100 01100001 01101101 01100001 00101100 00100000 01110011 01110000 01100001 01101101 00101100 00100000 01110011 01110000 01100001 01101101 00101100 00100000 01110011 01110000 01100001 01101101 00101100 00100000 01101000 01110101 01101101 01100010 01110101 01100111 01100111 --- 54 68 69 73 20 6D 65 73 73 61 67 65 20 63 6F 6E 74 61 69 6E 73 20 65 76 65 72 79 20 70 69 65 63 65 20 6F 66 20 6B 6E 6F 77 6C 65 64 67 65 20 74 68 61 74 20 65 76 65 72 79 6F 6E 65 20 68 61 73 20 61 62 6F 75 74 20 65 76 65 72 79 20 61 73 70 65 63 74 20 6F 66 20 55 4F 3A 20 6C 6C 61 6D 61 2C 20 73 70 61 6D 2C 20 73 70 61 6D 2C 20 73 70 61 6D 2C 20 68 75 6D 62 75 67 --- Enjoy!

Re: about the importance of information

Hail and Well met! I wanted to chime in on this thread to share a little UO player/dev history with you all. When I was just a player, I occassionally asked devs for specific esoteric information about UO. Such as when I wanted to know how bard skills functioned 'underneath the hood', so to speak. I admit back then I was a number cruncher, and I still am. Occasionally, I will receive a PM from a UO player interested in certain tidbits of information. In this case, Flutter wanted to know the % chances for Cu Sidhe to spawn in different hue colors. Not seeing the harm in sharing this information, I shared it with her and granted her permission to pass this information on to all of you. I've known Flutter for years, just as I knew past devs for years and felt she wanted to contribute positively by sharing such information. I simply appreciated this and wanted to help. On the other hand, when it came to luck, I decided to take a different and more conventional approach with that information. Luck is a much more sensitive topic, so Jeremy led the communcation on this topic. I asked EvilMantis (the former developer on Instanced Corpses) how luck behaved with them, and I also looked specifically at the code to make sure that the latest information to the players about Luck was as accurate as possible. If it hasn't been updated already, Jeremy is in the process of updating our website with the accurate information about Luck. Perhaps it is better that EA employees communicate more formally with the playerbase through the usage of UOHoC chats, Townhalls, Five on Friday, or strictly through community managers. However, I certainly wouldn't wanna see our communication restricted to that since there has been a long standing tradition of the UO devs having more direct contact with the UO playerbase. Hope this clarifies all of this. Thanks to everyone for caring about UO so much! Patrick "Leurocian" Malott

Since when does EA have a "Freedom of Information Act?"
