Wireless router

We got the Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with Speedbooster, cause we had no more space for another desktop comp in the living room, and I had to go set up my computer in the bedroom.

I'm pretty sure we did everything right. Made sure it's all secure so no one else other than the 2 of us is on it.

But it's really slowing our connection speed. We kept getting freeze lag spikes while in-game, loading websites takes so long. Last night, I disconnected the router, and just connected the modem straight to the computer. It was cutting our download and upload speeds almost half, sometimes more!

I tried looking through their site, but I couldn't really find anything useful, or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough. Don't know what else to do now.

If this router makes it hard for us to play, we're gonna have to go back to the old way, but then we'd have to buy a really long cable to connect my computer in the bedroom.

Anyone using wireless router have any tip on what we could do?

I had a wireless router that did the same thing. So i upgraded my internet service to inclue a modem with multiple ports. Seemed to work just fine.

Re: Wireless router

I wish I knew the answer, I have had this problem as well, dont know how to cure it but I am on my fifth wireless router at the moment and this time it might be working a bit better, I am now using a orange livebox at the moment, at least I can now get UOForums now without waiting ages for it to load.

good luck with your problem and i am sorry I can't help.

Re: Wireless router

Hi Ally,

Is it the WRT54GS?

Is the router brand new? Is the lag on both PCs... or one? And at the same time for the same duration?

Did you install the software that came with the router? Did you check the Linksys site for any firmware updates?

Then likely the router needs to be configured specifically for your ISP... this is a two-step process. It new... don't waste time. Call Linksys' tech support, and have them walk you through the settings for the router. Then call your ISP, give them the model number of the router... and they'll walk you through configuring the PCs and the router specifically for their network connection.

There are so many varibles to what could case this, and it's really a config issue... make the calls.

Re: Wireless router

Nok pretty much covered it.

I was going to ask, what is your connection speed from your ISP (up and down load speeds)? And which type of encryption did you select to secure it?

Re: Wireless router

Heh well I called our internet provider when I couldn't take it anymore. When he had me unplug the router and connect the modem straight to the computer, he saw that everything went up, and he pretty much said, well then it's your router that causing you to slow down. And that was it... As long as it's not their fault, he was okay.

You won't believe how many times I dropped the F word on him that night. I wanted to reach through the phone and strangle him.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll try and call Linksys.

Re: Wireless router

Hey Ally. I will ask my sister... we just upgraded to a new linksys secure router with 4 speed booster, or something like that. I plug into the router and am fine, she uses her wireless card that was for our old router and she was slowed down big time. I'll ask her how she fixed it.

Re: Wireless router

I've using wireless right now, I honestly can't stand it

I'm going to switch to the networking over power line system on my machine.
Seems to work just as well as a normal network.,
