We're not talking ..
.. any more on our home network.
First some techi information: Machine A: Windows 2000 SP 4, NetBEUI, Norton Internet Suite Machine B: Windows XP Media Edition SP 2, NetBEUI, Zone Alarm, AVG Machine C: Windows XP Media Edition SP 2, Net BEUI, Zone Alarm, AVG StarTech Com Switch StarTech Com Broadband Router, DHCP turned off I can ping any computer or router from any machine. All machines have internet access. All the machines have at least one shared resource. Machine B and C are connected to the switch which is then connected to the router. Machine A is directly into the router. I copied the files for NetBEUI from my 2000 machine to the XP machines. All machines "used" to talk. A little over a month ago Beloved told me her's wasn't talking to mine. I figured we would end up restarting them sometime and all would be well. Sadly to say it never got well. Since I don't know exactly when they quit talking. I really don't know what triggered them getting mad at each other. I have uninstalled and reinstalled NetBEUI on machines A and B to see if that would make a difference. Any of you have an idea or something I can check or do. It would be greatly appreciated. Beloved is not happy that we can't talk any more ![]() Vepl |

Re: We're not talking ..
First question...why are ya using Netbeui?
Why not switch to IP based networking? I haven't touched Netbeui I'm afraid, I didn't think it was still used hehe

Re: We're not talking ..
Well Adam when I first started networking home computers NetBEUI was easy. I have no problem "learning" how to use tcp/ip on the home LAN
. So step by step or any other way you want is good for me.Vepl |

Re: We're not talking ..
Well my personal opinion, is that TCP IP is better, although that's purely because it's what people tend to use for networks (I could be wrong)
All you have to do, is turn on DHCP via the router, so each pc gets their own IP address. Should be in the router's setup page, under the LAN area. Btw, when you say they stopped talking, do you mean you can't access shared folders etc?

Re: We're not talking ..
Correct they can't share folders or printers.
Since I manually assign IP addresses to each machine why does DHCP need to be turned on? And is there any other settings that will need to be changed or set? Vepl |

Re: We're not talking ..
Ah then you've got both Netbeui and TCP IP going ?
I didn't think you COULD assign an IP with netbeui? hehe I'd disable/uninstall netbeui and stick with tcp/ip If you're manually assigning IP's, what kinda format at you using for IP's? Do they all have the correct gateway and DNS info? (gateway/dns info should be teh router's IP)

Re: We're not talking ..
NetBEUI is none routeable. Yes I have been running tcp/ip and NetBEUI.
OK trying to to get machine B to grab an IP from the DHCP server. See what happens Vepl |

Re: We're not talking ..
Ah, personally I'd just stick with TCP, just seems easier from my own experience
If you set them all up that way, each having their own IP, then see if it helps Might be worth rebooting all three pc's and the router to (Router first)

Re: We're not talking ..
Seems I have gotten them on speaking terms again
. It was way past my bedtime when I got done. So will reboot everything tonight. Want to make sure it wasn't just a fluke that I got it working.Vepl |
