Stupid Internet!!! or is it... stupid me?

I'm about ready to throw something (probably my modem). Maybe someone can help me 'cause I don't want to call my service provider (2 reasons, 1 they suck and 2 I ran out of minutes until Feb 24).

Problem - Loose connection (no, not lose, loose)

Definition of loose connection (or atleast my def) - Staying connected to internet with failures. I.E. does not show my connection drops, yet can't do anything with internet (much like a massive firewall would do, but I'm pretty sure that's not it).

It "loses" connection every 5-10 minutes. In order to get back "connected" I have to do one of two things (sometimes both). I have to 1 - "Repair Local Area Connection" and/or 2 run "Network Diagnostics".

My theories are I either need a new modem (in which case I WILL throw my current modem) or I need to have my service provider re-send the signal.

Anyone have other theories that I could try in the mean time?

I would bet it is your modem/router. Had the same problem a while back. It took a couple of calls to find a tech that could really help me trouble shoot. When she was done helping me it was no doubt my router was taking a dive. So if you have a router separate from your modem it could be the culprit.

Thanks Vepl. I think I have an extra one of those around somewhere, I can try swapping that out. Although I'm still thinking the culprit is the modem.

Yes, we had a similar problem.... Our service provider had us disconnect the modem as well as the router for 5 minutes.... plug everything back in and vwalla.... problem solved.... Hope this helps.

Thanks, tried that though, which brought me to thinking one was going bad.

Left them disconnected overnight.

Sounds like the exact same problem I was having before I bought my new computer. Do you have another computer you can hook up and test to see if its the computer or not?

I will try my laptop to see if it has the same problem. Didn't think about that.

Anyone remeber the command to run a ping diagnostic on your network card? I know I did it at one point for this exact problem, and I was losing packets to my network card, but I cannot remeber the command to run it for the life of me.
