PERSONAL ACTIVITIES:
  • I am consistently improving my job skills by learning AutoCad and using every opportunity to study new information on surveying, boundary law, and the art of Survey Math. I am preparing myself for the Fundamentals Exam while gaining the required experience to achieve these personal goals.
*not sure why you felt obligated to mention working overtime ... leave that for the 'interview' unless it is something standard in your field of work ...

*I noticed you don't mention your work as Crew Chief or at least used the title somewhere in your experience section.

Again this is just my perspective .. I'm a nit picker with things like this so feel free to toss it aside or use anything that you might find helpful (like punctuation) ..

If I was hiring, I would at least want to talk more with with you based on your original resume. Good Luck

Re: Resume advice...

Thanks a lot for the feed back .. im actually looking for a "nit picker" so pick away..

to answer your questions.. i ddin't mention the Crew chief in my responsibilities.. because the responsibilities basically describe that job... but i will look it over and try to fit it in..

as far as the overtime.. i just really want a job that gives it.. to be honest it didn't really feel right there anyway

thanks again for the comments.. going to rewrite a few things now

If anything, what we do in the military, when asked for our SSN, is just give the last 4.
The only time someone should need your social is for an Official document, and eventhen, it should have a privacy act notice printed somewhere on the document. I believe it is the privacy act of 1974. Otherwise, screw them if they want it and theres no PA notice

Re: Resume advice...

So far, advise given is good.

Somethings for consideration.

Keep it to two pages.

Job, location, time at job.
A few bullets, quantify them too, give numbers. Try to match bullets, (IE 4 per job, or 5 per job), invesigate for buzz words in the feild your applying for, and use them.
IE: Managed 17 Servers, 20 clients, for development network
IE: Reconfigured networking saving 10,000 anually, and bring uptime to 99.5%

Keep your exp listing related to job you want to get.

Education:
(No real need to list Highschool, but do list GED)
Technical classes! Trade Classes! Any job related classes.
in Class, Place, Date, Certificate or Degree

Additional Information:
Outside Personal training that would help, CPR, First Aid, Firearms, Security Clearances ect.

Close with Reference's on request.

Good Luck

Re: Resume advice...

A couple things:

No need for HS (as F'Nor stated) if youre listing college expeirince HS is a given.

One page if possible, definitely no more than 2.

List place of employment under expirience, and always start with most recent. So youd start with Para Surveyors, then next oldest job. I never give more than 2...3 if the job you had sounds good, like managerial tasks or something. Also, give your immediate superiors name and number if possible.

I wouldnt list Gen Ed college classes, just so you can save room on the page.

The only other thing is e-mail; make sure its a professional address. Having my personal email on my resume gave a few interveiwers a chuckle...not a really bad thing, but something for consideration...

Good luck on the new job!!

Smile Re: Resume advice...

I was talking to my boss a few months ago about how I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, at the age of 28 He recommended this book this College professor talked about called What Color is my Parachute. It’s about Job hunting & changing careers. I bought the 2004 edition out of Borders Bargain bin for like $5. Here is a little bit of what I read about resumes:

Quote:
What you want to end up with is a resume which cites your relevant past accomplishments, take care in case to cite:

a) what the problem was
b) what especial obstacle (timewise, or otherwise) you had to overcome
c) what means you used to overcome the obstacle, and solve the problem
d) what the results were, of your actions, stated as concretely as possible in terms of things accomplished, money saved, money earned etc.

It should essentially be a written proposal that looks forward rather than (as the typical resume does) backward. You are not asking them to do something for you; you are offering to do something for them. And citing your past accomplishments as proof that you can do, in the future, the things you claim you can do.
F’nor is giving you examples of what a,b,c,d should look like.

Re: Resume advice...

A resume is good however there is a critical piece missing, the cover letter.

Nothing (IMO) is more important that the cover letter, the first thing a potential employer wants to see is a simple cover letter.

Keep it short and sweet, a paragraph is perfect

Make it formal (obviously)

Make it specifically tailored, you don't want a even a hint of generic form here.

Hard to explain, but you want words to go for the wow factor. A resume makes you look like a statistic, a cover letter leaves an impression that there really is a person linked to the resume. Personality is key here, I reassert you don't want be a simple statistic.

As such, you will leave a lasting impression when decisions are made.

I always liked to finish with the line:

"I look foward to meeting with you, could we schedule a time and place for a more formal interview? I thank you for your consideration, I hold the firm belief that my potential is limited only by opportunity."

Don't try to put too much of a spin on it, you want to transmit a confident, composed, and positive attitude without making you seem prozac happy.

As for the resume, that is where you want the generic format with absolutely no hint of humanity. That is not what they look for there, they want to know you by your cover letter.

*Looks at cover letter* "well this person has the attitude we need"
*Looks at resume* "and the qualifications*

Hope this helps you, good luck.
