| Guest | Proper funding for teachers During the next session of the Legislature, school funding will be a major priority in the state of Texas. Every school finance plan offered to address the current school funding crisis calls for local property tax relief and greater state investment in public education – particularly for recruitment and maintaining efficient Texas Teachers. The new state investments suggested in these plans begin at $1 billion annually. In September 2004, the State District Judge ruled that the state’s method of funding public schools violates the Texas Constitution on two grounds: the amount of revenue is insufficient to meet the constitution’s requirement to provide “an adequate suitable education” and proper pay for Texas Teachers; and the property tax system, under which an increasing number of districts are forced to tax at the statutory cap of $1.50 to meet state-mandated standards for academic performance, has effectively removed “all meaningful discretion” from local authorities and become an unconstitutional state property tax. Debate and litigation on this matter will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. A level of new state funding will be needed to solve this debate. Therefore the question follows: how can the state of Texas ensure that additional state dollars are used to improve the quality of public education? The answer is clear: these funds must be spent to recruit, reward and retain highly qualified Texas Teachers for Texas classrooms. |

My wife is about a year away from her double bachelors (Early Childhood Ed. and Psych) and she wants to teach second grade. Just to stay in the Ed Bachelors program, you have to maintain, I think, a solid B average. After getting you Bachelors and getting hired you have 4 years to get your Masters Degree, mandatory. There is also the Educators exam that you have to pass. After all that, you get paid less than what a starting Radiographer (X-Ray Tech) does after an Associates degree where you only have to maintain a straight C average. We have a test that we have to pass too... I personally think that dont do that bad when you figure in how many days per year that they are required to be at work, but they do have ALOT of take home work (who woulda thought when they were in grammar school that the teachers had homework too! ) and staying late for conferences, meetings, etc.The real killer is that these are the people that see our children as much or more than we do! Bah, I could go on and on about all the people in this world that are way overpaid and the ones that are way underpaid... |

Personally, I don't think they could pay me enough, ever, to be able to sit in a room full of snotty nosed brats and try to actually make them learn something. I admire teachers... they have to have a lot of patience. ![]() We are all broken and wounded in this world. Some choose to grow strong at the broken places. --Harold J.
