Low cost computers

If you had to buy a low cost computer, with monitor and keep the price, say under $900 what would you buy and where.

Tryiing to help a friend keep in budget. Basic use of the computer is Quicken, UO and other gaming. I don't believe WoW is involved.

I know what I would do, but want to get some more input.

Re: Low cost computers

I think many basic pc's with a half decent graphics card would do- dont get a Dell though

Re: Low cost computers

actually, i would say don't get a hp, had that once, and it wouldn't play eq once it went to the new directx9.0c patch, no matter what i did, wouldn't play it.

would say compaq or dell in my opinion, as i have a dell now and am having no problems with it, running eq, wow, lotro, or uo.

Re: Low cost computers

Everytime I get a Compaq I swear I'll never get another. I have great luck with HP. (same company so it really shouldn't matter?)

Micro Center has some great prices on refurb HP media series. Less than $600 bucks gets you dual core, 2 gig ram, 300 gig hard drive, tv tuner (with some crazy inputs), dvr (for tv tuner), lightscribe dvd burner etc...

Re: Low cost computers

I've been very pleased with my Dell...just watch for their pricing...it can be a little funky at times.

Re: Low cost computers

I've had great luck with Dell over the last few years. But they can be pricey. I've also had some luck with HP's in recent years with other folks. All depends on what your looking to do with them. If you want to play games like WoW, etc in my opinion your not going to be able to do so very well on a low end system without some changes. Most come with intergrated video memory, so first thing to look for is a PCI-E expansion slot. You definately need to add a video card. Almost everything that you don't custom build nowadays is coming with Vista which needs as much memory as it canget to run decent.

WoW 1:30 am, I need to sleep.

Re: Low cost computers

I have seen Dip do wonders with a low end machine on some very memory and cpu consuming games.

Re: Low cost computers

Mr Silverfoot where do you live? US I take it of your UO shards...

Can you build yourself? - at some US internet store called something with Egg (Someone els might know) Sell really cheap things.. and good!
For 900$ you can get a high tech... so with less you can still get a really good one.
