Forced to upgrade to Vista?

Bah

So, i've had windows xp home for as long as I can remember, bought it shortly after it came out, but because I upgrade my pc now and again, it keeps coming up with "The hardware has changed significantly and you need to reactivate"

So I go through the steps, and it fails, saying i've used the key to many times to reactivate

I call up, go through their activtion by phone thing, same thing, fails there to

So, do I have to BUY a new copy?

The software I have is NOT OEM, it's a retail copy of XP

I've heard of this happening. I bought it for my computer a while back, then reformmated it later, and it said no go. I ended up installing my buddies version of xp pro, and havent had any problems. I have known people that were forced to buy new copies. I dont know why they did this with XP..

Most M$ software is set up for a limited number of installs. I think its usually three, home PC, home laptop, work laptop.

I have a student liscense of XP Pro that supposedly has unlimited installs. its gone through about 10 installs and activations so far and still hasnt quit.

Once Vista comes out, you should be able to pick up XP fairly cheaply...

That's what I have, the student license of XP Pro. I have given this to probably 100 people or more in the past year, and used it on 7 or 8 computers personally. It works flawlessly every time, and I never have any activation problems.

It was given out recently in a different form for this years college students.
My belief is that this years student license is not as reliable.

How does one buy a student copy of software? Now that i'm back in school i'd like to get my hands on Adobe CS

You should be able to find out if your school offers them in the library or student center...

Mine was delivered to me via a college student. I downloaded an ISO from their personal HDD. I could not say how to obtain one by another means.

I was browsing the Dell website the other day and noticed they are really pushing Winows Media and Windows XP with Vista upgrade. The price for the computers is much higher then I remember a few years ago also!
