DRY Pet Food Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet Feline

From the Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. web site:

"Topeka, KS (March 30, 2007) - In accordance with its over-riding commitment to pet health and well-being, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Inc. is voluntarily recalling Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the market. Hill's is taking this precautionary action because during a two-month period in early 2007, wheat gluten for this product was provided by a company that also supplied wheat gluten to Menu Foods. U.S. Food and Drug Administration tests of wheat gluten samples from this period show the presence of a small amount of melamine. Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dry represents less than one half of one percent of all Hill's products. This is the only product Hill's currently sells in the United States and Canada that contains wheat gluten from any supplier. No other Hill's Prescription Diet® or Science Diet® products are affected by this voluntary recall. Hill's Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline canned cat foods, manufactured by Menu Foods, were previously withdrawn from the market as a precaution."

Recalled product U.S. & Canada UPC* Size

(all lot numbers) 4 lb. bag

Re: DRY Pet Food Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet Feline

yw! So sad though My sis-in-law's cat died a few weeks ago, completely suddenly of kidney and liver failure. She was only 8 years old and completely healthy. My SIL has long since thrown out the cans of cat food (since they're single-serving cans, she would open one, serve it, and toss the can) so we aren't sure it was caused by the contaminated pet food, but she uses one of the recalled brands of wet food so it probably was

Re: DRY Pet Food Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet Feline

Thanks, Adam. It makes me so worried for my guys, knowing there has been contaminated food in this area. To think I could be hurting my cats just by feeding them... it's just an awful thought.

Even worse, I can't help thinking that this contamination was some sort of practice for an attack on humans. I mean, we eat stuff out of boxes off the shelves of food stores every day, trusting that it won't hurt us. Too scary to think about.

Re: DRY Pet Food Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet Feline

I don't want to think of it like that Kit

I am worried because I don't know all the dry food. My dogs Dry dog food - the wet cat food was recalled and I've since thrown the bag away etc.

Where can we find a whole list of EVERY food recalled?

Re: DRY Pet Food Recall: Hill's Prescription Diet Feline

Well, this new recall by Hill's is a VOLUNTARY recall - not one mandated by the FDA.

The FDA is refusing to release the name of the company that distributed the contaminated wheat gluten. Hill's decided on their own to recall their food after they were notified that they had received a shipment of the tainted wheat gluten.

The FDA has also said they have no plans to expand the recall to dry food, but personally I think it's their responsibility to at least give pet owners the right to choose whether or not to risk their pets' lives by feeding them potentially contaminated food!

So, the only mandated recall list is the one of wet foods from the Menu Foods web site.

Honestly, I would avoid all cat and dog food that contains wheat gluten, until someone exposes the source of the contaminated wheat gluten. Once we know who supplies the wheat gluten, a list of companies that use wheat gluten from that supplier could be formed.

As long as the FDA is keeping quiet, though, we have no way of knowing.

Unless somebody could figure out who Hill's gets their wheat gluten from.

They said the "whole" pet food market is getting a great boost in sales over this.
