X-Men's Dave Cockrum dies at 63

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Comic book illustrator Dave Cockrum, who in the 1970s overhauled the X-Men and helped popularize the relatively obscure Marvel Comics title into a publishing sensation and eventually a major film franchise, died Sunday. He was 63.

In his Superman pajamas and with his Batman blanket, Cockrum died in his favorite chair at his home in Belton, S.C., early Sunday morning. He had suffered a long battle with diabetes and related complications, his wife, Paty, said Tuesday.

At Cockrum's request, there will be no public services and his body will be cremated, according to Cox Funeral Home. His ashes will be spread on his property.

At Marvel Comics, Cockrum and writer Len Wein were handed the X-Men. The comic had been created in 1963 as a group of young outcasts enrolled in an academy for mutants, but the premise failed to capture fans.

Cockrum and Wein took the existing comic, added their own heroes and published Giant-Size X-Men No. 1 in 1975. Many signature characters Cockrum designed and co-created — such as Storm, Mystique, Nightcrawler and Colossus — went on to become part of the X-Men films starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry.

Cockrum received no movie royalties, said family friend Clifford Meth, who organized efforts to help Cockrum and his family during his protracted medical care.

"Dave saw the movie and he cried — not because he was bitter," Meth said. "He cried because his characters were on screen and they were living."

Cockrum was born in Pendleton, Ore., the son of an Air Force officer. He set aside his interest in art while serving in Vietnam for the U.S. Navy. He moved to New York after leaving the service and got his big break in the early 1970s, drawing the Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics before moving to Marvel.

In January 2004, Cockrum moved to South Carolina after being hospitalized for bacterial pneumonia. As his diabetes progressed, his drawings became limited. His last drawing was a sketch for a fan, who attended a small comic book convention in Greenville, Paty Cockrum said.

Meth said Cockrum, who will be cremated in a Green Lantern shirt, will be remembered as "a comic incarnate."

"He had a genuine love for comics and for science fiction and for fantasy, and he lived in it," Meth said. "He loved his work."
WOW, way too many names passing on. It's about the only time I feel my age

I am sorry to hear, it happens... Death happens. It really really sucks. =( But Silverfoot... I do not know how old you are but I bet you lived the time era I wish like crazy I was apart of... I HATE the generation I was introduced / born into everyone doesn't seem like they were back in my parents time... I mean there was still bad people but the majority seemed like they really helped out... stuff was cheaper back then and you defintally got your quality in items... had record players and 8-tracks. I really wish I could have been apart of it.

Here I am still listening to records and love them but can not even find a decent record player to play them on! The record players we had eventally broke sense my dad was in the military and moved around so much. Cars back then quaility not made out of trash and has very beautiful looks to them... there is a ton more things... I mean there is always the bad things too but you will find them everywhere. I envy anyone who lived with in that time era late 50's and on... I am not proud at all to be the age and time era I am in now... I wish I had already been born pretty far back and dead by now.

Heck people even married back then and was a common thing, today it just seems like shake and bake relationships very short lived and they move on to the next person. No real dedication or responability =*( Again I know it probably happened in that era too but least it was more common to hear of marriage and they stick togeather until death and I hope beyond.

I used to know this elderly man acrossed the street he served in World War II very nice guy. How he talked about his wife all the time it seemed like she was alive but she has been dead for many years now. But just can see just how much he loved her and that is rare for me to see. I do not see most of these younger couples like that. But yeah I mean they actually cared for one another and that is because of his time era seeming to teach him this. They, the ones before my era came around seem to be the only true ones with "feelings" now days people just do things to totally peeved there other person off or least the people I ran acrossed... None of this "friendly" neighbor stuff and not to mension the loud music I hear thumping down the streets they do not care if you can hear it. Longs they are pleasing themselves screw everyone else... common curtisy (sp?) seems to have been breed out of people now and just getting worse.

My parents are always commenting on how when I was younger I NEVER acted like that a brat, the screaming, running around the store acting like ejets, demanding this and that >_< Not everyone of course allows this but the majority of them so called "parents" are not teaching them proper things and they just growing up like that. Them younger years are I think the most impact and what shape you to be you than most think. Alot of support and care goes into this and many lack this...

Alot of people you knew will slowly start...well you know =*( but atleast you was born in a good era and I am sure you knew alot of great people and had alot of tv heroes. And you will have the greatest thing of all though... memories of all that you have experienced that I never will. I am darn right jelious...

And you say "feeling your age" as if it was a bad thing!

Bah anyway sorry for my rambling just ignore me like you all need to do sometimes ^_^ hehe. Go me for yet another off subject post... I am so good at it >_<

It's alright RMS, we really all aren't here just for UO, so don't worry about your words being ignored.

As to the passing of Dave Cockrum, it's a damn shame with all the crap he got from Marvel. I've been an x-men fan now for over twenty years now, and Night Crawler, who he created, has always been one of my favorite characters. But I guess it's we the fans whom have to remember the greatness of the artists for them to truly become an immortal. So cheers to Dave, may he always be remebered and rest in peace.

Re: Another "name" passes....

Thanks for the reply RMS!
I'm not that old , 53, but it seems as you get older you become more aware of the limited amount of time we actually do get to spend here on earth.
While I do enjoy the simplicity of my era, don't make it more than it was. We still had our own problems with war, race riots and such. Don't judge your own generation just yet, let history decide how well you handled it.
After all, couldn't you say it was my generation that made the foundation for your generation, just like my father's did for me.

I'd say the thing that bothers me most today is folks screaming about thier own personal rights while ignoring the other person's rights.

Just some random thoughts.

It's all I could ever wish for, and something quite a few do not get to do.
