Smelting higher ore types definitely help skill gain though -- especially smelting one unit at a time, as mentioned above. It also keeps you from ruining a large stack of high end ore you just mined.

Even now, at 105 mining with my gloves, I still smelt verite and valorite one unit at a time. I even split my gold and agapite up into smaller stacks of 5, just so I won't waste too much if I fail.
Aye as soon as you level up and are able to mine a new color it's best to go do it... then run back over the lower colors after you run outta spots.

Re: Working a Miner...

I would figure that the spots are probably the same across the shards. It would be easier on the coding it seems. Try on your shard, going out of the north road, cross the bridge, go left, stop in that little V about 8 tiles away from the bridge, and mine in the corner mostly on the flat part of the stretch. You should get some Val there. if not, then I guess they do indeed change across the shards..

Aye thats a val spot on Cats too.
I know they said that the wood spots are different per shard. I guess they only did that so people wouldn't be marking runes they got from locations on the beta client though.

Re: Working a Miner...

I do know that ore spots do change over periods of time if they are mined enough, so this may cause some alteration when it comes to shard to shard ore spots. Because obviously some shards are busier than others.

Re: Working a Miner...

I worked my miner up about 3 or so years ago, and hadnt mined in quite some time, I tried again a few weeks ago, and my memory served me well, I went back to the same spots, no change.

I used to circle umbra, and by the time I get back to where I started, the ore was reset.

Actually there is a system in UO, with the best of my recollection that basically if a Ore Spawn is mined X number of times in a month is has a 1% chance of decreasing in spawn level.

Its a very very small chance. This is why if you go to Britian in Fel(Guardzone area) and mine there you will find almost nothing but Iron and Low end ores. Scripters basically mined that place dry over a year or so.

Aye the wood spots vary per shard. Dev team has already told us that.

Go to Fel. Get on a boat. Then mine from your boat on the mountains north of Minoc. You will get lots of ore saved up to sell at the vendors in town, plus gain lots of skill points in no time. You can also work another skill at the same time like hiding by setting your macros just right. Mine, hide, gain....that kinda thing.

Ship mining is great.

I've never done ship mining...I've a few places that i mine on a regular basis and you won't hear me argue about the scripters or speed miners.

Thats right you don't tell them about my boat mining in T2A. I roxxors Minoc any day of the week with T2A. I have NEVER made it to East Ice Island(where the champ spawn is), simply because I spend 5 hours mining from the area around papua and north.
Also never have been PKed there, and did I mention the Blacksmith is about 3 building south of the docks???

AHHHH LLAMA!

We love ship mining. Gives us a chance to travel around fel on the high seas. Besides, only once in all this time did I ever get our miner killed by reds who just happened to be standing around in a place where my ship crashed into shore, and I hadn't learned all the commands for the tiller quite right. The only time I did get killed was by a water element, and that was because I wasn't good at hiding yet. So I decided to work the macro so that he would mine and hide at the same time. Built both skills up and I would usually just leave the boat right there beside the mountains loaded up with every kind of ore and come back every day for a few minutes just to refresh the ship somewhere. Otherwise it will sink on you. You should try it just for fun.
